Flats, conversions and leaseholders

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the design visit.

How we make bespoke kitchens for Friday Hill

We often use moisture-resistant MDF in kitchens, because it copes with a room that gets steamy. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in colours agreed with you. If you are living with spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets and room for everything in the kitchen, that is what kitchens are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

An island needs space around it to work, and not every kitchen has that. Interwar, semi-detached and detached homes make up a big part of the housing around Friday Hill, and some of those kitchens have been opened up enough to take one. We check the clearances during the design visit, along with where water and power would need to reach. Services to an island are for your plumber and electrician.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Caring for painted furniture

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Know your appliance sizes early
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Check stairs, hallways and lifts for access

Follow the appliance makers’ guidance for your oven, hob and dishwasher, and the care advice for your worktop.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease early. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Friday Hill

Can you make bespoke kitchens for a home in Friday Hill?

Yes, Friday Hill is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Friday Hill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Do you do the plumbing and electrics?

No. We are carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets. Plumbing is done by your plumber, gas by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and electrics by your electrician, and we design around where their work goes.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and a written quote follows.

How long will the kitchen take to fit?

Every kitchen is different. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote, so you can plan your other trades around it.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Kitchens in Friday Hill: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Friday Hill, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 45%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Friday Hill, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. About 13% of homes around Friday Hill were built before 1919, well below the figure for Waltham Forest as a whole, about 45%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. So the walls behind kitchens here are more likely to be later brick, block or plasterboard, and they’re checked at the design visit.

If you live near The Highams Park, a cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen. For an older house near Church of St Peter and St Paul, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. For families living near Longshaw Primary School, a drawer set aside for lunch boxes and water bottles keeps mornings calmer.

What happens on fitting day

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed during the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. We start with how you use the kitchen and what isn’t working.
  2. We come to measure up and plan the layout with you.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. The units are made and finished in our workshop.
  5. We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician handle the plumbing, gas and electrics.

Before we arrive

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

How to get a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Standard cabinets come in set widths, so most layouts end in a filler panel. Bespoke cabinets are made to the room’s real sizes, so the runs can fill the space properly. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Why us?

  • Every London borough and the City of London covered
  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • Made for your room, not a standard size
