Under-Stairs Storage in Leytonstone

In Leytonstone, we design under-stairs storage around the room you actually have. Your under-stairs cupboard is designed at a visit to your home and made at our workshop.

  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
  • Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter
  • An old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall

How we make under-stairs storage for Leytonstone

Where a staircase is open to a living space, the storage under it becomes part of the room. That calls for clean lines, well-fitted doors and a finish that suits the rest of the room. We can make plain or panelled fronts, painted to sit with the walls or to stand out. In Leytonstone or anywhere else, the aim is storage that looks considered, not added on. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about no room for a small desk or a place to work and a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter.

Around Leytonstone, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and houses of that age are full of awkward spaces: under the stairs, in the bay, along the hall and under the eaves of a converted loft. Fitted storage is designed to make those spaces useful, made to follow walls that are seldom true.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

What it is made from

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed to follow the wall, closing the gap a standard unit would leave. They’re one reason fitted storage looks built in. The plinth at the bottom does the same job at the floor.

Hand-painted finish

Some people prefer a hand-painted finish for its softer look. It can be applied on site, in a colour agreed with you. If it’s ever chipped, it can be touched up.

Looking after your furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Count the coats and pairs of shoes in daily use
  • Think about what you’ll keep in each drawer
  • Make room so the whole space can be measured
  • Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board

Wiping the fronts with a soft, damp cloth is normally all they need. Avoid scourers and harsh chemicals, and dry the surface after wiping. The edges of drawers and the areas around handles pick up marks first.

Keep the way to the meter or fuse board clear. You may need to reach them yourself in a hurry, so leave the path open. With its own door, the meter stays in reach without much effort.

Is bespoke worth it?

Ready-made units are designed for shipping and quick assembly. Ours is designed for one staircase and built in our workshop to suit it, with birch plywood drawer boxes that hold screws well and carry weight. The right choice depends on how hard you want the space to work. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that do not meet the skirting. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

How we price under-stairs storage

There’s no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How square the room is

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote.

What to send when you get in touch

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Approximate measurements of the space

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, drop us a line using the contact form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Leytonstone

My home in Leytonstone is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in Leytonstone?

Yes. Leytonstone is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Waltham Forest and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

What does an under-stairs cupboard cost?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The size of the space, the number of drawers and doors, and the finish all shape the price. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Fitted storage in Leytonstone

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Leytonstone were built before 1919 (about 65%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 12%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Leytonstone include Church of St John the Baptist (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east, and Church of St Andrew (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If you live on or close to a main road in Leytonstone, let us know during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

For a family home near George Tomlinson Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If you live near Leyton Jubilee Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. Valentines Mansion, about 2.4 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them.

What happens on fitting day

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.

  1. You tell us about the space under the stairs.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and finished, and we check each pull-out with you before we leave.
  6. Treat the fresh paintwork gently while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
