Ickenham Under-Stairs Storage

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make under-stairs storage for homes in Ickenham, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • An old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall
  • A fuse board that’s hard to get to
  • A hallway crowded with coats and shoes

About our under-stairs storage in Ickenham

Where a staircase is open to a living space, the storage under it becomes part of the room. Here the doors, drawer fronts and finish matter as much as the storage behind them. Fronts can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. The result should look like part of the house, not an afterthought. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about wanting a quiet corner for paperwork and an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter.

An interwar house tends to have truer walls than a Victorian one, though rarely square corners. Much of the housing around Ickenham is interwar, semi-detached or detached, and every piece is still scribed where it meets the wall. Lids, doors and drawers are set level on site so they run true.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

Why people ask for under-stairs storage in Ickenham

Some people simply want somewhere for coats and shoes. A coat and shoe section under the stairs keeps the floor clear and the door easy to open, and everyone knows where things go.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • A sloping corner nobody can reach
  • Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
  • Coats and shoes piling up in the hall
  • Wanting a quiet corner for paperwork

For a flat near West Ruislip station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

What to check before you book

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Real projects you can actually look at

How we price under-stairs storage

The price for your room depends on:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Getting in touch

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Your postcode and the borough

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To book a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. It’s useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch with a few details and, if you like, a sketch. It is useful to say whether the meters are under there.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the stairs, the hall and what you need to store.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. Your storage is made at our workshop, cut to the angle of your stairs.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready for the first coats and shoes.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Could you do it yourself?

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Before and after fitting day

Getting the most from under-stairs storage starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Mention any decorating plans so the work can be timed well
  • Think about what you will keep in each drawer
  • Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes

When you load the drawers, put the heaviest things low and towards the front. It helps the runners and keeps the storage working well. Shelves are made for the things you told us about during the design visit, so it is worth keeping to that plan.

Don’t store things in front of the meter or fuse board. You may need to reach them yourself in a hurry, so leave the path open. A dedicated door makes this easy to keep up.

Questions we’re often asked

I live near West Ruislip station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Hillingdon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Ickenham?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

How long will the fitting take?

How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Drawers, doors and carcasses are all made in the workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character.

Are drawers or cupboards better under the stairs?

Many designs use both. Deep pull-out drawers suit the shallow end under the bottom steps, and a cupboard at the tall end handles taller things. We talk it through during the design visit.

Could the space under my stairs take a desk?

It depends on the height and how open the space is. We look at it during the design visit and tell you honestly whether it will work. Where it works, it makes a neat spot for a laptop and paperwork.
