Bedrooms in Ickenham: local notes
Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 39% of the housing in the area around Ickenham, with about 35% built between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Part of Ickenham is in the Ickenham Village Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Ickenham. We go through parking and access during the design visit.
If your home is one of the older houses near St Giles' Church, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. The wider area includes historic houses such as Ickenham Hall, about 0.4 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
Ickenham is part of the London Borough of Hillingdon, about 2 miles north-east of Ruislip. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Ickenham is part of that. We cover places right across Hillingdon.
In UB10, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Our area takes in homes on streets such as Long Lane, Court Road and The Avenue, whether you want walk-in wardrobes or another piece made for the room. Neighbouring places we cover for walk-in wardrobes include Hillingdon (1 mile south), Ruislip Gardens (2 miles east) and Ruislip Manor (2 miles north-east). Elsewhere in Hillingdon, we also cover Ruislip (2 miles north-east), Hayes (3 miles south), Yeading (3 miles south-east), Yiewsley (3 miles south-east), West Drayton (4 miles south) and Yiewsley (3 miles south).

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Ickenham
Drawers, shelves and shoe storage make a walk-in wardrobe work day to day. Folded knitwear sits well on shelves, smaller things go in drawers and shoes can have racks or shelves of their own. If the room allows, we can include a dressing table. We make walk-in wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are room for two wardrobes in one space and proper shoe storage.
A loft conversion is a common way to add a bedroom to a semi or an interwar house, and the slope can take storage cut to its angle. A big part of the housing around Ickenham is interwar, semi-detached or detached. We work in lofts that are already converted, and the furniture is scribed to the slope and the walls.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising at the measuring visit.
Boards, parts and paint
Birch plywood
We use birch plywood where strength matters, which suits drawer boxes and shelves. The edge can be left on show or painted.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting can be done in your home, once the units are fitted. It’s easy to touch up later.
From workshop to your room
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.
- You get in touch and describe the room.
- We visit to plan the room and measure the way in, including stairs, landings and doorways. It is useful to mention parking then, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
- We send a quote in writing.
- In our workshop we build the units in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The units are brought in, assembled and set level.
Before fitting day
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
Ask for a quote
The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To book one, message us from the contact page.

What walk-in wardrobes can’t fix
We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:
- New lights or sockets
- Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
- Painting the walls of the room
If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
What goes into it
- Hanging, shelves and drawers
- Birch plywood
- Hand-painted finish
- Shoe storage
- Dressing table
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Spray-painted finish
Do you need walk-in wardrobes in Ickenham?
The most common reason is simply running out of wardrobe space. Rails are crammed, shelves overflow and shoes end up under the bed. A dressing room spreads it all out so you can see it.
We’re often asked to help with:
- A use for a small spare room
- Somewhere to sit and get ready
- Room for a growing wardrobe
- A side each for a couple
For a flat near West Ruislip station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone

- Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Questions from Ickenham
Can you fit furniture in a home close to West Ruislip station?
Yes. We cover all of Hillingdon and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Is it better to have doors or open storage?
There’s no single right answer. We can fit doors, open storage or both, and we will talk it through at the measuring visit.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
The furniture is built in sections. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.
