Nash Under-Stairs Storage

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make under-stairs storage for homes in Nash, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it
  • Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
  • Storage that doesn’t match the hallway

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.

How we make under-stairs storage for Nash

Every staircase has its own shape. The underside slopes, the side of the stairs runs at its own angle and the floor below is rarely perfectly level. Each under-stairs cupboard we make follows those lines, so the fronts sit neatly against the stairs. That’s something a standard unit cannot do, in Nash or anywhere else. If you are living with wanting a quiet corner for paperwork and nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Nash, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Those spaces, along with bays and hallways, are where fitted storage can add the most. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Questions we are often asked

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Nash?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Is it possible to have a desk built under the stairs?

That depends on the shape of your stairs and the room beside them. We look at it during the design visit and tell you honestly whether it will work. If it does, a compact desk with shelving can suit paperwork and a laptop.

Can the under-stairs storage be painted to match the hall?

Yes. We paint the storage in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand. It can match the walls, the stairs or the woodwork, so it sits quietly in the hall.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Do photos help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Nash homes and under-stairs storage

About 69% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Nash went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 12% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Nash include Priors Farmhouse (Grade II), less than half a mile north-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. More than half of the homes in the area around Nash (about 69%) date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Interwar houses usually have a straight flight of stairs with a cupboard below, often holding the meters or the fuse board, so the design keeps them reachable.

If you live near Coney Hall Recreation Ground, under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. For an older house near Keston Parish Church, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them.

What we do not do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
  • Plastering and decorating around the new storage

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Pull-out drawers
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves

Is it time for under-stairs storage?

The low end of the space is usually the problem. It’s too low to stand in and too deep to reach into. Pull-out drawers solve that by bringing the back of the space to you.

Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:

  • A dark, wasted space under the stairs
  • Wanting a quiet corner for paperwork
  • Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
  • The low end of the space going to waste

The wider area includes historic houses like Down House, about 2.4 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Real projects you can actually look at

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. You tell us about the stairs and what you’d like to store, like coats, shoes or the vacuum cleaner.
  2. At the design visit, the space is measured and any meters are noted.
  3. The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
  4. Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you.

Preparing the room

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
