Under-Stairs Storage in New Addington
Under-stairs storage for your home in New Addington: pull-out drawers, cupboards and coat storage under the stairs. Each piece is designed at a visit to your home, made in our workshop and fitted by us.
- A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
- Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
- A dark, wasted space under the stairs
Need under-stairs storage in New Addington?
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Off-the-shelf units are made for flat walls and square corners, and the space under a staircase is neither. Boxed units usually leave awkward gaps under the slope and dead space behind. Bespoke storage is designed and cut to the shape of your stairs. It’s a bigger investment than a flat-pack unit, and the return is in the space it uses. A ready-made unit pushed back to the wall leaves a gap above the skirting, which wastes depth and gathers dust. Built-in pieces sit tight to the wall, scribed over the skirting.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Under-stairs storage in New Addington
No two staircases are quite the same. The soffit slopes, the stringer sets its own line, and floors are often a little out of level. We scribe the storage to the stairs and the walls, so it looks as though it has always been there. It’s the part of the job a boxed unit simply can’t manage. If you are living with a fuse board that’s hard to get to and a vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.
Post-war housing makes up a good share of the homes around New Addington, and in London that can mean houses or flats in blocks. Post-war houses typically have space under the stairs that can do more, while in a flat, the hallway and any recess are the places to look. Any meters, fuse boards or boilers stay reachable, with the clearances their makers set out.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the under-stairs cupboard we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
What we do not do
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:
- Moving gas pipes under the stairs
- Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with
- Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we’ll give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

- Hand-painted finish

- Moisture-resistant MDF

Fitting day, step by step
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Walls in post-war homes can be concrete or blockwork, so fixings are chosen for the wall on fitting day. We protect floors and doorways as the furniture comes in.
- You contact us about the space under your stairs.
- At the design visit we measure the underside of the stairs and the floor, then talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage.
- We send a quote in writing for the storage.
- In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
- We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it’s in.
How to prepare
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
Arranging a design visit
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Tips worth knowing
People planning under-stairs storage often ask about these. They help before and after fitting:
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
- Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes
- Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
- Make room so the whole space can be measured
If the hallway is being decorated afterwards, ask your decorator to protect the fronts. Masking tape can lift fresh paint, so it shouldn’t go on the new finish. Should you have a question about the storage, get in touch through our contact form and we’ll help.
Keep the way to the meter or fuse board clear. Readers and engineers need to reach them, and you may need to as well. With its own door, the meter stays in reach without much effort.

Under-stairs storage for homes in New Addington
Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 78% of the housing in the area around New Addington, with about 13% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. About 78% of homes in the neighbourhood around New Addington were built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Homes from that era tend to have little built-in storage, so under-stairs cupboards make a real difference, with fixings chosen for the wall. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If you live on or close to a main road in New Addington, let us know at the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
If you live in a flat close to Hayes (Kent) station, under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Questions we’re often asked
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Hayes (Kent) station?
Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Is New Addington in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?
Yes, New Addington is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Croydon and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Normally not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
Are drawers or cupboards better under the stairs?
Often a mix works best. Deep pull-out drawers suit the shallow end under the bottom steps, and a cupboard at the tall end handles taller things. We talk it through during the design visit.
What is under-stairs storage made from?
The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, so it suits the doors and fronts, while birch plywood gives strength to the drawers and carcasses. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.
