About fitted wardrobes in UB6

What goes inside is where a fitted wardrobe earns its place. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers are arranged around what you own, so nothing is squashed and no height is wasted. It’s useful to think about what you wear most before we meet. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about clothes with nowhere proper to go and wasted space beside the chimney breast.

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote.

  1. You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
  3. Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.

What affects the price in UB6

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across UB6

We make fitted wardrobes for homes across UB6, in Southall, Greenford and Northolt and beyond. On an external wall, ventilation is designed in to help keep condensation away. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whatever it is made of.

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 45% of the housing in the UB6 postcode district, with about 16% built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. More than a third of the homes in UB6 (about 45%) date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. Of the 12 places we have local pages for in UB6, 6 have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.

Since August 2023, the Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London, and red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping.

Greenford: Northolt Manor, about 1 mile north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Betham House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Could you do it yourself?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

When you need someone else

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
  • Structural changes to the room
  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

Most people come to us because they’ve simply run out of space. Clothes spill onto chairs, into spare rooms and under the bed. Built-in wardrobes make use of the full wall, up to the ceiling.

We are often asked to help with:

  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
  • A bedroom that never feels tidy
  • A sloping ceiling that is hard to use
  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom

Caring for painted furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
  • Let us know which walls face outside
  • Think about where you will keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations

Leave a little space between clothes and the back of the wardrobe, particularly on an external wall. Air moving through helps avoid condensation and mould.

Don’t dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut. A little ventilation in the room helps.

Is bespoke worth it?

Modular interior systems can be rearranged easily, and that flexibility is useful. A bespoke interior is planned around what you own, and adjustable shelves keep some flexibility.

What to check before you book

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in UB6

What if my bedroom floor is not level?

It is common, and it is allowed for. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls, so the doors line up properly.

Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?

The space in front of the wardrobe normally decides it. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better. We will look at the room with you at the design visit.

How is the price worked out?

Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

We make it in our workshop, to the design and sizes agreed after the design visit. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not typically. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

How do you get fitted wardrobes into a flat?

The wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors. That’s why we measure the route, not just the room. If you are in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to walls.
