Under-stairs storage in Acton Green, Ealing

In Acton Green, we design under-stairs storage around the room you actually have. Your under-stairs cupboard is designed at a visit to your home and made at our workshop.

  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
  • A dark, wasted space under the stairs
  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it

Under-stairs storage in Acton Green

Bespoke under-stairs storage or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf storage comes in the colours the maker offers. Bespoke storage can be painted in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand, so it can match the hall, the stairs or the woodwork. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Under-stairs storage in Acton Green

Under-stairs cupboards often hold a gas meter, an electricity meter or the fuse board. They need to stay accessible, so readings and safety checks can still be made. We plan the storage around them, normally with a door that leaves them in clear reach, so the space works hard without hiding anything that matters. At the design visit in Acton Green, we note what’s there and design around it. If you’re living with wanting a quiet corner for paperwork and a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter, under-stairs cupboards made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Original features like shutters, cupboard doors and panelling are worth keeping where they survive. Around Acton Green, where homes from before 1919 make up a large share, new storage can be made to sit beside them rather than replace them. Panel details can be drawn to suit the house. For a listed home, fixing into original joinery can need consent, so check first.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Questions we’re often asked

Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Acton Green?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you fit under-stairs storage to the uneven walls of an older house in Acton Green?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

What does an under-stairs cupboard cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The mix of drawers, doors and shelves, and the finish you choose, all play a part. We set it all out in a quote in writing.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Do you cover Acton Green?

Yes. We work in Acton Green and across Ealing.

Should I choose drawers or cupboards under the stairs?

It depends on the shape of the space and what you want to store. Pull-out drawers suit the low, deep end, as they bring the back within reach. Cupboards suit the tall end, for coats or a vacuum cleaner.

Boards, parts and paint

Doors and drawer fronts

What you see of the storage is mostly the doors and drawer fronts. They can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the hall. Their tops follow the angle of the stairs.

Plinths and scribe strips

We trim scribe strips to the exact line of the wall. They help the storage look as though it was always there. At floor level, the plinth hides any slope in the floor.

Acton Green homes and under-stairs storage

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Acton Green were built before 1919 (about 51%) and since 2000 (about 22%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. 14 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Acton Green. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 22% of households in the streets around Acton Green, based on Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

If you live near Turnham Green, under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. Hogarth's House, about 0.9 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them.

The problems under-stairs storage solve

A hallway full of shoes and coats is a common reason to get in touch. With a rail, hooks and shoe drawers under the stairs, the hall stays clear, and the family has an obvious place to put things.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • A dark, wasted space under the stairs
  • Needing a compact spot for a laptop
  • Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
  • A low corner too deep to reach into

For a flat near South Acton station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

What happens on fitting day

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. First you tell us about the stairs and what you’d like to store beneath them, and whether the meters or fuse board are in there.
  2. We come to measure, note any meters or fuse boards and go through the design, keeping the meters and fuse board easy to reach.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make every part in our workshop, shaped to the angle of your stairs. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls. Any meters stay easy to reach.

How to prepare

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

What under-stairs storage cannot fix

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Moving gas pipes under the stairs
  • Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
