Questions we are often asked

Is Temple in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?

Yes. Temple is one of the places we work, along with the rest of the City of London and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Temple?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it. The City is inside the Congestion Charge zone too, and the ULEZ covers all of London.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

How long is the fitting for under-stairs storage?

The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We make every part in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Under-stairs storage in Temple: what you get

The space under a staircase is often the hardest-working spot in a house, and the least organised. Our under-stairs storage is planned around what you need to store, with pull-out drawers, cupboards or a combination of the two. For a home in Temple, it starts with a design visit to measure the space and talk it through. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are open space under the stairs that collects clutter and a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter.

Hallways in period terraces are often long and narrow, with the stairs rising along one wall. Around Temple, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so every bit of depth is weighed up when storage is planned. Shallow units keep the way through clear.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Temple

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Temple were built before 1919 (about 48%) and since 2000 (about 22%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Temple, 32 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, and each borough runs its own. That usually means a van in Temple needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. Parking is worth mentioning at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Near listed buildings like Middle Temple Hall, less than half a mile north-west of the centre of Temple, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. Close to Garden Bridge? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. The wider area includes historic houses such as Dr Johnson's House, about 0.2 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

Where other trades come in

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Structural changes to the staircase itself
  • Any work on gas pipes or appliances
  • Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Pull-out drawers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the space and what it holds now is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the space and plan the storage around the meters, so readers and engineers can still reach them.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with access to the meters planned in.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before fitting day

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Starting with a design visit

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, use our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Advice

When is bespoke worth it?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

What affects the price in Temple

What you pay depends on:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Parking near your home
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, then set it out in the quote.

Before the design visit

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • How you want to use the space
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.
