Fitted wardrobes in WC2H: how it works

The inside matters as much as the doors. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers are arranged around what you own, so coats and dresses have room and shirts don’t waste height. It is worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes and standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall.

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the wardrobes you have in mind.
  2. We visit to measure the room and discuss the design.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the wardrobes, so you can see what’s included.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
  5. We fit them in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls.

What goes into your quote

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Getting a quote

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, use our contact form.

Homes across WC2H and their bedrooms

From Aldwych, Adelphi and Temple to the quieter streets, bedrooms across WC2H range from box rooms to large rooms with bays. Fitted wardrobes are made for the room you have, using the full height where it helps. Hanging, shelves and drawers inside are arranged around what you store.

Homes built before 1919 make up about 46% of the housing in the WC2H postcode district, with about 23% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. More than a third of the homes in WC2H (about 46%) were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Older bedrooms typically have alcoves and tall ceilings, both of which fitted wardrobes can use. About 77% of households in WC2H live in purpose-built flats, the 2021 Census shows. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

In London, the route into a home matters as much as the room, so we look at both during the design visit.

Clare Market: Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary Le Strand, under half a mile south of the centre of Clare Market, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a family home near St Clement Danes CofE Primary School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Practical tips

People planning fitted wardrobes often ask about these. They help whatever the room:

  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
  • Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
  • Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed

Hang clothes evenly along each rail rather than packing one end. Very heavy coats sit best on a shorter rail.

Make sure vents at the top or bottom of the wardrobe are not blocked, especially where the wardrobe meets an outside wall. Watch for musty smells or marks on clothes and deal with any damp early.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

What we do not do

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
  • Electrical work, such as moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Decorating or plastering the room

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, which leaves gaps above and beside them. A fitted wardrobe runs to the ceiling and the walls.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Will the quote be in writing?

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

What to send when you contact us

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • What the furniture needs to hold

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.

Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?

The space in front of the wardrobe typically decides it. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better, while hinged doors suit rooms with space to open them. We look at it with you when we measure.

Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, with long hanging where there is height and shelves or drawers where it’s lower. It makes good use of space that’s hard to furnish.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Is the furniture made to order?

We make it in our workshop, to the sizes taken at the design visit. After that, we fit it in your home.
