Fitted wardrobes across the City of London: what to expect

We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. Doors and panels are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth and scribing them to the walls and ceiling. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about an awkward slope in a loft bedroom and empty alcoves in the bedroom.

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote.

  1. You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the layout, materials and finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung.

How our quotes work

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

Homes across the City of London and their bedrooms

Across the City of London, bedrooms range from period rooms with high ceilings to compact rooms in newer blocks. The design follows the room, not a catalogue.

In the City of London, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 40%) and the years since 2000 (about 27%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. About 40% of homes in the City of London were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Bedrooms from that era tend to be regular, so fitted furniture can run wall to wall, with fixings chosen for concrete, block or brick. A quarter or more of the homes in the City of London (about 27%) were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board.

Controlled parking zones cover large parts of London, and depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

City of London: If you live near St Alphage Garden, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. If your home is one of the older houses near St Olave Old Jewry, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

Moving home often prompts it. Standalone wardrobes from a previous home may not fit the new bedroom. Built-in wardrobes are planned for the room you live in now.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom
  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
  • Too little room for clothes

What it costs

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Parking near your home

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It’s useful to talk about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Before the design visit

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • How you want to use the space
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Approximate measurements of the space

Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf wardrobes come in standard heights and widths, which leaves gaps above and beside them. A fitted wardrobe runs to the ceiling and the walls.

What to check before you book

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Have they thought about parking near you?

Flats, conversions and lettings

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.

Boards, parts and paint

Spray-painted finish

Because the doors are sprayed before fitting, they arrive already finished. Give the paint time to cure fully.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the wardrobes are fitted. Small marks are simple to touch up, and it works well in a period bedroom.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in the City of London

Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?

Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.

What materials do you use?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes, and the quote says which is used where.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Do you work outside London?

No. We cover London only: every London borough and the City of London.

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in the City of London?

Yes. We design and make fitted wardrobes for homes in the City of London.

Where is the furniture made?

It’s made in our workshop, to the sizes taken at the measuring visit. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.
