Under-stairs storage in Upper Ruxley, Bromley

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make under-stairs storage for homes in Upper Ruxley, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Stairs open to a room, with clutter on show
  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
  • The low end of the space going to waste

Under-stairs storage in Upper Ruxley

Is it time for under-stairs storage?

In a smaller home, every bit of space counts. A well-designed under-stairs cupboard can take the coats, shoes, cleaning things and bags that would otherwise crowd the hall. It also takes pressure off the other cupboards in the house.

Some of the things we are asked to solve include:

  • The low end of the space going to waste
  • An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter
  • Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter
  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go

If you live near Foots Cray Meadows, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home

How to choose a carpenter in London

Under-stairs storage in Upper Ruxley

We make each under-stairs cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood suits drawer boxes and carcasses, as it’s strong and holds screws firmly, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and fronts. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s brought to your home in Upper Ruxley and fitted. If your home has a staircase with untidy space beneath it and space under the stairs that’s hard to use, that’s what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Around Upper Ruxley, where many homes date from the post-war decades, windows are often wide, with radiators below. Seating over a radiator needs a grille or open front to keep the heat moving. Fitted storage can also use the hall, the landing or the space below the stairs, made to fit the room as it is.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Practical tips

These points come up often when people plan under-stairs storage. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:

  • Make a list of what you want to store before the design visit
  • Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Empty the cupboard so we can measure every corner

When we’ve finished fitting, the drawers and doors are ready to use. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Avoid sticky tape, heavy knocks and harsh cleaners while it hardens.

Closing drawers fully helps keep the runners and fronts in good order. A quick sort every so often stops drawers getting too heavy. Wipe up any spills, particularly near the floor, before they dry.

Is bespoke worth it?

Standard storage is built for a level floor and a square space, but the space under a staircase rarely offers either. Boxed units typically leave awkward gaps under the slope and dead space behind. Storage made for the space follows the angle of the stairs and uses its full depth. It costs more than something off the shelf, and what you gain is the space a standard unit cannot reach. A ready-made unit pushed back to the wall leaves a gap above the skirting, which wastes depth and gathers dust. Built-in pieces sit tight to the wall, scribed over the skirting.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Post-war blocks often have shared stairwells and lifts, so under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for each. Tell us about any building rules on lifts or working hours at the measuring visit.

  1. You get in touch with a few details and, if you like, a sketch.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the stairs, the hall and what you need to store, and check where the meters and fuse board sit.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. Your storage is made at our workshop, cut to the angle of your stairs.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready for the first coats and shoes.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Is Upper Ruxley in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?

Yes. Upper Ruxley is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Upper Ruxley?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

What materials do you use for under-stairs storage?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors and fronts are MDF, which is stable and paints well, while birch plywood gives strength to the drawers and carcasses. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.

Can you match the storage to my hallway?

Yes. The colour is your choice and is agreed in the quote. We can spray it in the workshop or hand-paint it in your home. Both can be matched to a colour you already have.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you send us a few details through our contact form.

Making use of awkward spaces in Upper Ruxley

In the streets around Upper Ruxley, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 51%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 20%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Upper Ruxley, Historic England’s list includes Old Church of St Botolph (Grade II), under half a mile west, and Ruxley Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 51% of homes in the streets around Upper Ruxley were built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Post-war homes often have fewer nooks than older houses, so under-stairs cupboards add storage that was never built in, with fixings chosen for the wall.

For a family home near Hope Community School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If you live in a flat close to Swanley station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.
