Bespoke kitchens in Upper Ruxley, Bromley

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on bespoke kitchens in Upper Ruxley starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • A kitchen island with room around it
  • A kitchen planned around your appliances
  • Tall larder storage

What affects the cost of bespoke kitchens

There’s no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

What to send when you get in touch

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Upper Ruxley

A kitchen needs other trades as well as a carpenter. Your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, and we plan the cabinets around where their work goes. We make kitchens from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are a central island in a larger kitchen and room for everything in the kitchen.

In homes from the 1950s and 1960s, the boiler is often in the kitchen. Many homes around Upper Ruxley were built between 1945 and the early 1970s, so the design often has to work around one. Any cabinet around a boiler keeps the clearances its maker asks for, with any boiler work left to an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

How fitting day works

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed during the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Drilling into concrete is noisier than into brick or plaster, so if neighbours are close, a note before fitting day can help. We work within any rules your building has on noise and hours. Dust is kept down and cleared as we go.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and how you cook. It helps to know the worktop, sink and appliances you have in mind.
  2. We visit, measure the walls, floor and ceiling, and go through the design, including where the sink and appliances will go.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The kitchen is fitted in your home, and your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe engineer do the plumbing, electrics and gas. We do not arrange those trades, so it is useful to book them early.

Before fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Advice

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Upper Ruxley

Can you make bespoke kitchens for a home in Upper Ruxley?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London, and Upper Ruxley is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Upper Ruxley?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

It is made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the design visit.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What are the kitchen cabinets made of?

Our kitchens are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray painted or hand painted. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf kitchens are quicker to buy and typically cost less and they suit many newer homes. In an older house with uneven walls, they tend to need filler panels and leave gaps. A bespoke kitchen costs more but is made for the room. Post-war rooms are often compact, and standard furniture sizes waste space at the ends and the top, while fitted furniture fills the space. The pieces are made to the room’s own widths.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.

Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Upper Ruxley include Old Church of St Botolph (Grade II), under half a mile west, and Ruxley Farmhouse (Grade II), less than half a mile west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

Living in a block of flats near Swanley station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your children go to Hope Community School or a school nearby, a tall cupboard by the door can take school bags and coats as part of the kitchen. If your home is one of the older houses near St Botolph's Church, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout.
