Under-stairs storage for your home in Biggin Hill
Under-stairs storage for homes in Biggin Hill
No two staircases are quite the same. The soffit slopes, the stringer sets its own line, and floors are often a little out of level. We scribe the storage to the stairs and the walls, so it looks as though it has always been there. It is the part of the job a boxed unit simply cannot manage. People normally come to us about a staircase with untidy space beneath it and a vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
A good part of the housing around Biggin Hill is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the bay window at the front, the space under the stairs and the box room are the usual places to gain storage. Any meters or fuse boards that need to stay reachable are designed around.
A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Biggin Hill
Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in Biggin Hill?
Yes, we work across Bromley, Biggin Hill included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details.
Do you cover homes near Woldingham station?
Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Can the under-stairs storage be painted to match the hall?
Yes. The colour is your choice and is agreed in the quote. A spray-painted finish is done in our workshop, and a hand-painted one can be done on site. Either finish can follow a colour already in the hall.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
What does an under-stairs cupboard cost?
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The size of the space, the number of drawers and doors, and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.
Honest limits
Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:
- Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
- Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
- Changing where a meter sits, which isn’t carpentry
Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.
What it’s made from
- Coat hooks and shoe shelves
- Spray-painted finish
- Pull-out drawers
- Hand-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Moisture-resistant MDF
What it’s made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
We use moisture-resistant MDF because it stays stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It suits the doors, drawer fronts and panels of an under-stairs cupboard, where a smooth, even finish matters most.
Pull-out drawers
A tall pull-out drawer can hold coats on a rail or a vacuum cleaner standing up. Lower drawers suit shoes, bags and boxes. The design visit is where we agree the mix.
Before and after fitting day
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Clear the space before the design visit if you can
- Look for meters, a fuse board or pipes before we visit
- Tell us if the hall is being decorated
- Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the fronts clean. Avoid scourers and harsh chemicals, and dry the surface after wiping. Handles and the edges of drawers are touched most, so give them a wipe now and then.
Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. A loose handle is easy to tighten before it works its way out. If a drawer stops running smoothly, get in touch through our contact form and describe it.
What happens on fitting day
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are normally simple, though we still measure the route in as well as the room. Under-stairs cupboards arrive in sections and are assembled in place.
- You get in touch with some details and, if you like, a sketch.
- At the design visit, we look at the stairs, the hall and what you need to store.
- A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed.
- Your storage is made at our workshop, cut to the angle of your stairs.
- We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
Before we arrive
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
Arranging a design visit
Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, message us from the contact page with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Flats, leases and landlords
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.
