Materials and finishes
Doors and drawer fronts
Doors and drawer fronts are made from moisture-resistant MDF and painted to your colour. Their edges are cut to follow the angle of the stairs, keeping the lines neat.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done in your home, once the storage is fitted. It’s easy to touch up if it gets marked, which suits a busy hallway.
Under-stairs storage for homes in Wennington
Each under-stairs cupboard is made at our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes that carry weight, and MDF gives the doors and fronts a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s brought to your home in Wennington and fitted. If your home has nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board and a sloping corner nobody can reach, that’s what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Wennington, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Those spaces, along with bays and hallways, are where fitted storage can add the most. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the under-stairs cupboard we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished.

Bespoke under-stairs storage or ready-made?
Flat-pack furniture is designed to be easy to carry home and quick to assemble. Ours is designed for one staircase and built in our workshop to suit it, using birch plywood for strong drawer boxes and moisture-resistant MDF for painted fronts. Which suits you depends on how much you want from the space. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors are not perfectly true, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.
We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.

Looking after your furniture
People planning under-stairs storage often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:
- Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
- Consider the colour of the hall, the stairs and the skirting
- Plan decorating around the fitting
- Mention any parking rules on your street
When we have finished fitting, the drawers and doors are ready to use. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Avoid sticky tape, heavy knocks and harsh cleaners while it hardens.
Keep the doors and drawers closed when the space is not in use. A quick sort every so often stops drawers getting too heavy. Wipe up any spills, particularly near the floor, before they dry.

What affects the cost of under-stairs storage
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- The width and height of the space
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it.
Getting in touch
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
Wennington homes and under-stairs storage
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 47% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Wennington, with about 22% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Wennington include Church of St Mary and St Peter (Grade II*), less than half a mile west, and Lennard Arms Inn (Grade II), less than half a mile east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Terraced houses are home to about 37% of households in the area around Wennington, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a terraced house, the space under the stairs often holds the meters or the fuse board, and they must stay accessible.
If you live in a flat close to Rainham (Essex) station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your children go to Brady Primary School or a school nearby, under-stairs cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. If you live near Wildspace Conservation Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.

From workshop to your room
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.
- First you tell us about the stairs and what you’d like to store beneath them.
- We come to measure, note any meters or fuse boards and talk through the design, keeping the meters and fuse board easy to reach.
- You receive a quote in writing for the storage we’ve discussed.
- The drawers, doors and carcasses are built in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls.
Before fitting day
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Wennington
Do you cover homes near Rainham (Essex) station?
Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Wennington?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
How much does under-stairs storage cost?
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. It varies with the size of the space, how many drawers and doors you want, and the finish. To get a quote, message us from the contact page and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Can under-stairs storage work around the fuse board?
Yes. It’s common to find a meter or fuse board under the stairs, and access has to be kept. At the design visit we measure around them and leave a clear way in. Moving a meter is not our work, so we design for where it is now.
