Heath Park Under-Stairs Storage
Thinking about under-stairs storage in Heath Park? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing, before anything is made.
- Storage that doesn’t match the hallway
- A staircase with untidy space beneath it
- A low corner too deep to reach into

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Flat-pack furniture is designed to be easy to carry home and quick to assemble. Ours is designed for one staircase and made in our workshop to suit it, with birch plywood drawer boxes that hold screws well and carry weight. Which suits you depends on how much you want from the space. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors are not perfectly true, and standalone units can lean or gap. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Under-stairs storage in Heath Park: what you get
In some homes the stairs rise from the living room or kitchen, so the storage beneath them is on show. Here the doors, drawer fronts and finish matter as much as the storage behind them. We can make plain or panelled fronts, painted to sit with the walls or to stand out. The result should look like part of the house, not an afterthought. We make under-stairs cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are space under the stairs that’s hard to use and no room for a small desk or a place to work.
Around Heath Park, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the hallway may be wider than in a Victorian terrace, with room for a cupboard by the door. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille where there’s a radiator underneath. Each space is measured and under-stairs cupboards are made to suit it.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

From workshop to your room
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It’s useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.
- You tell us about the stairs and what you’d like to store, like coats, shoes or the vacuum cleaner.
- At the design visit, the space is measured and any meters are noted.
- The design is agreed and a written quote follows, with the finish set out.
- The storage is made at our workshop and painted in your colour. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The storage is fitted, scribed to the stairs and checked with you. The way to any meters is left clear.
How to prepare
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time

Advice
Questions from Heath Park
Is parking a problem for fitting in Heath Park?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Gidea Park station?
Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
How long is the fitting for under-stairs storage?
How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Because everything is made in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the hallway as clear as we can while we work.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us.
What is under-stairs storage made from?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Birch plywood holds screws well, which matters for drawers that carry weight. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
Before and after fitting day
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes
- Let us know if the hall is being decorated
- Empty the cupboard so we can measure every corner
- Decide whether you’d like coats on hooks or on a rail
A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. Keep a little of the paint, or a note of the colour, for later. A spray-painted finish is smooth and even, and small marks often clean off with a damp cloth.
Keep the doors and drawers closed when the space is not in use. A quick sort every so often stops drawers getting too heavy. Deal with any wet shoes or umbrellas before they mark the base.

If your own home is a period one, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.
