Under-stairs storage in Collier Row
Under-stairs storage for homes in Collier Row
In a narrow hallway, the stairs may offer the only spare room for coats and shoes. We can make a coat section with a rail or hooks, shoe drawers and a small shelf for keys and post. Painted in a colour you choose, it reads as part of the house rather than a piece of furniture. For a home in Collier Row, it can make the front door feel far calmer. If your home has a hallway crowded with coats and shoes and open space under the stairs that collects clutter, under-stairs cupboards made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Collier Row, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Those spaces, along with bays and hallways, are where fitted storage can add the most. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Boards, parts and paint
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. Drawer boxes and carcasses that take a load are often made from it. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.
Pull-out drawers
A tall pull-out drawer can hold coats on a rail or a vacuum cleaner standing up. Lower drawers suit shoes, bags and boxes. The design visit is where we agree the mix.
Where other trades come in
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:
- Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with
- Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer
- Structural changes to the staircase itself
If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.
What it’s made from
- Coat hooks and shoe shelves
- Pull-out drawers
- Hand-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Spray-painted finish
Caring for painted furniture
None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:
- Note the size of anything tall you want to store
- Consider the colour of the hall, the stairs and the skirting
- Note the things that need a home under the stairs
- Check whether your meters or fuse board are under the stairs
When we’ve finished fitting, the drawers and doors are ready to use. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Avoid sticky tape, heavy knocks and harsh cleaners while it hardens.
Don’t store things in front of the meter or fuse board. You may need to reach them yourself in a hurry, so leave the path open. A dedicated door makes this easy to keep up.

What affects the price in Collier Row
Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:
- The overall size of the piece
- The internal fittings
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Spray painting or hand painting
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Getting in touch
Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you are ready, drop us a line using the contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
From workshop to your room
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it is worth mentioning during the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.
- You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
- At the design visit we measure the underside of the stairs and the floor, then talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage.
- We send a quote in writing for the storage.
- The drawers, doors and carcasses are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angle of the stairs.
- On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to follow the stairs and walls. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it’s in.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Keep pets in another room while we work
How to get a quote
The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A written quote follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, drop us a line using the contact form.

Questions we’re often asked
Is parking a problem for fitting in Collier Row?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in Collier Row?
Yes. Collier Row is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Havering and London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
What is under-stairs storage made from?
The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, so it suits the doors and fronts, and birch plywood is strong, so it suits drawer boxes and carcasses. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
That is normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
