Walk-in wardrobes in Monken Hadley

Lighting makes a big difference in a dressing room. Wiring for new lights is a job for your electrician. We can plan the units so there’s space for the lighting you want and agree the details when we measure. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are setting aside a corner of a large bedroom and moving wardrobes out of the bedroom.

A loft conversion is a common way to add a bedroom to a semi or an interwar house, and the slope can take storage cut to its angle. A big part of the housing around Monken Hadley is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Our part starts once the loft has been converted, and the furniture is scribed to the slope and the walls.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room.

  1. You contact us about a walk-in wardrobe or dressing room.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and check how the units will reach the room. It is useful to mention parking then, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. In our workshop we build the units in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry the sections in, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls.

Before fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Starting with a design visit

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot advise on your lease.

Questions we’re often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Monken Hadley?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Monken Hadley?

Yes, we work across Barnet, Monken Hadley included, and across the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

How much time does fitting need?

Every room is different. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

The furniture is built in sections, sized for the route as well as the room. At the design visit, we measure the route not just the room.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Usually not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character.

Bedroom storage in Monken Hadley

In the neighbourhood around Monken Hadley, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 42%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 25%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List has 55 entries within half a mile of the centre of Monken Hadley. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. About 42% of homes in the neighbourhood around Monken Hadley were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. A small spare room in an older house can make a good dressing room, with storage scribed to walls that wander.

Near listed buildings like Hadley House, less than half a mile south-east of the centre of Monken Hadley, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live in a period home close to Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design. The wider area includes historic houses like Wyllyotts Manor, about 2.4 miles north. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

Why bespoke in Monken Hadley?

Off-the-shelf wardrobe systems are quicker to get and usually cost less, and in a square room they can work. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely fit neatly. Ours is built to the room’s real shape. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall typically ends with a gap, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can use the full height too.

There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
