Walk-in wardrobes in Cockfosters

Hanging space is the heart of most walk-in wardrobes. Full-length hanging takes coats, dresses and long garments, while double hanging, one rail above another, fits shirts and jackets into half the height. The balance of long and double hanging is based on your clothes. If you are living with separate space for two people’s clothes and somewhere to sit and get ready, walk-in wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

A loft conversion is a common way to add a bedroom to a semi or an interwar house, and the slope can take storage cut to its angle. Around Cockfosters, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large part of the housing. Our part starts once the loft has been converted, with each piece scribed to the slope and set level.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Practical tips

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Think about long versus double hanging
  • Keep the room ventilated
  • Plan lighting with your electrician

Keep heavy items low and lighter ones high and spread the weight along the rails. It helps the shelves and rails stay straight.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.

The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Barnet has its own. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the design visit.

For a flat near New Barnet station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. For families living near Trent CofE Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Why people ask for walk-in wardrobes in Cockfosters

A spare room or box room that rarely gets used is another reason. Fitted out as a walk-in wardrobe, it becomes part of everyday life than keeping a bed in it.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • A side each for a couple
  • A bedroom without crowded wardrobes
  • Proper shoe storage
  • A dressing table with drawers and a mirror

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
  • How parking will work on your street

Flats, leases and landlords

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it during the design visit.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Cockfosters?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

I live near New Barnet station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can a box room become a walk-in wardrobe?

Often, yes. A box room can take hanging, shelves and drawers on its walls, while leaving space to stand and turn. We’ll measure and plan it at the design visit.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Usually not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character.

How long will the walk-in wardrobe take to fit?

How long fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

What happens on fitting day

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. We visit to plan the room and measure the way in, including stairs, landings and doorways.

  5. The units are brought in, assembled and set level.

How to prepare

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
