Walk-in wardrobes in Underhill, Barnet

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Underhill, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Long and double hanging planned around your clothes
  • A walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom
  • Turning a box room into a dressing room

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Underhill

A walk-in wardrobe can also be part of a bedroom. Where a bedroom is large enough, a section can be set aside with a partition or a run of units, either open to the room or behind doors. Any new partition wall is for your builder, and we fit the furniture inside. Most enquiries start with a calmer, clearer bedroom and separate space for two people’s clothes; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Older bedrooms bring bowed walls and high ceilings, newer ones stud walls and lower ceilings. Your home in Underhill could be either, or something in between. We scribe, level and fix to suit whichever you have. Ceiling height sets how tall the furniture can go.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the walk-in wardrobe designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Underhill

In the area around Underhill, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 24%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 24%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List records 13 entries within half a mile of the centre of Underhill. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home in Underhill is on or near a main road, tell us at the design visit. We will plan where the van can stop.

Near listed buildings like Church of St John the Baptist, about 0.5 miles north-west of the centre of Underhill, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. For an older house near St John the Baptist Church, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For a flat near New Barnet station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Underhill is in the London Borough of Barnet, about 3 miles south of Finchley. Design visits and fitting in Underhill can be on a Saturday, by prior arrangement. Across Barnet, we cover Underhill and the places around it.

Questions from Underhill

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Underhill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do you make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Underhill?

Yes, we work across Barnet, Underhill included, and across the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Does a walk-in wardrobe need air flow?

Yes. Air needs to circulate around stored clothes, particularly against a cooler external wall. We allow for ventilation in the design.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Standard systems come in set widths and heights and rarely reach the ceiling. We can build right up to the ceiling and from wall to wall, which can add a lot of storage. Walls and floors are seldom perfectly flat in any home, so standalone furniture can lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

What happens on fitting day

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design.
  3. You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each unit is levelled and scribed to follow the walls.
  6. Before we leave we go through the doors and drawers with you; new paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Starting with a design visit

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Advice

What affects the cost of walk-in wardrobes

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Parking near your home
  • How square the room is

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Before the design visit

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. When you contact us, it’s useful to send:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • What the furniture needs to hold

To get a quote, get in touch through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and a quote in writing follows.

Honest limits

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Fixing the cause of damp
  • Building a new partition wall
  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. How it works.
