Walk-in wardrobes in Sutton Common

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Sutton Common

Many London homes have a small room that is awkward as a bedroom. Fitted out from wall to wall, it can take the clothes that crowd the bedroom, and the bedroom itself feels calmer. The layout leaves room to move and to see what you have. We make walk-in wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about long and double hanging planned around your clothes and a built-in dressing table.

Around Sutton Common, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the box room over the stairs is a classic spot for fitted furniture. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in as well as the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. We start with the space and the clothes it needs to hold, from long coats to shoes.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the hanging, shelves and drawers, including any dressing table.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build everything in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the units are fitted and trimmed to the room. We then check the doors and drawers with you.

Before fitting day

  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Getting a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.

Questions we’re often asked

Does a conservation area in or near Sutton Common affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you cover homes near St Helier station?

Yes. We cover all of Sutton and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can you turn a small spare room into a dressing room?

Often, yes. The layout depends on the room, the door and the window, so we work it out when we measure.

Is it better to have doors or open storage?

That depends on how you like to use the space. Doors, open rails and shelves can all be combined, and we will talk it through during the design visit.

What happens at the measuring visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

We plan the route in at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

What we do not do

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Getting consent under your lease
  • Plastering, decorating or flooring
  • Damp treatment or repairs

Not sure whether your space suits walk-in wardrobes? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Walk-in wardrobes in Sutton Common: local notes

In the streets around Sutton Common, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 73%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 11%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Sutton Common, Historic England’s list includes Mecca Bingo Club (Grade II), about 0.5 miles east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 73% of homes in the neighbourhood around Sutton Common date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead.

If your children go to Abbey Primary School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. Nonsuch Mansion, about 2.1 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Sutton Common is about 1 mile south of Sutton, part of the London Borough of Sutton. Homes in Sutton Common are part of the area we cover for walk-in wardrobes, as part of our work in every London borough. Across Sutton, we cover Sutton Common, along with the rest of the borough.

How it’s made

Shelves

We plan shelving for knitwear, bags and things you use less often. Each shelf is sized for its load.

Hand-painted finish

If you’d like the units to match the room’s woodwork, hand painting on site works well.

Do you need walk-in wardrobes in Sutton Common?

A spare room or box room that rarely gets used is another reason. Turning it into a dressing room can make better use of it instead of a store for odds and ends.

Walk-in wardrobes can help with:

  • Shelves for shoes and bags
  • The right mix of long and short hanging
  • A walk-in wardrobe in a box room
  • A walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom

For an older house near St Lawrence Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

There is a place for both. In a square room with a tight budget, a ready-made system may be enough. For awkward rooms, period homes or a built-in look, a bespoke design tends to earn its place. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
