How we make walk-in wardrobes for The Wrythe

Drawers, shelves and shoe storage make a walk-in wardrobe work day to day. Folded knitwear sits well on shelves, smaller things go in drawers and shoes can have racks or shelves of their own. A dressing table with a mirror can be built in where there is space. If you’re living with a built-in dressing table and setting aside a corner of a large bedroom, walk-in wardrobes made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the housing around The Wrythe, bedrooms typically have regular walls, a window on one side and sometimes a chimney breast. Fitted furniture can run along the longest wall, with the inside arranged to suit you. If the loft has been converted, sloping ceilings bring their own options.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

What walk-in wardrobes cannot fix

Not everything around walk-in wardrobes is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Making good walls and ceilings
  • Building work to create the room
  • Damp treatment or repairs

Not sure whether your space suits walk-in wardrobes? You can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it is made from

  • Dressing table
  • Birch plywood
  • Hanging, shelves and drawers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Shoe storage

What affects the price in The Wrythe

There’s no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • The internal fittings
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Parking near your home

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Before the design visit

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • How you want to use the space
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.

Questions from The Wrythe

Will a conservation area stop me having walk-in wardrobes fitted in The Wrythe?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you cover homes near Carshalton station?

Yes. We cover all of Sutton and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Can you build a dressing area in my bedroom?

Yes. We design the units to make a dressing area within the bedroom, and we fit the furniture once any building work is done.

Does a walk-in wardrobe need air flow?

Yes. Air needs to circulate around stored clothes, particularly against a cooler external wall. We allow for ventilation in the design.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling at several points, as few rooms are truly square.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. We make the walk-in wardrobe in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each unit is levelled and scribed to follow the walls.
  6. Before we leave we go through the doors and drawers with you; new paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Before we arrive

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Tips worth knowing

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Think about whether you want doors
  • Count your shoes before the design visit
  • Measure how much long hanging you need
  • Make sure walls are dry before units go in

If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can be touched in. Spray-painted finishes are smooth and even, and clean easily with a soft cloth.

A new partition wall is building work, so it comes before us. We make and fit the units inside.
