Fitted wardrobes across SM3: what to expect

Fitted wardrobes are built to the room, from the floor to the ceiling and from wall to wall. There is no dusty gap on top and no awkward space at the ends. For a bedroom in SM3, we start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a room too narrow for hinged doors and mismatched bedroom furniture.

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what you keep in your wardrobes now.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
  3. The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
  5. We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

What affects the price in SM3

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

Bedroom storage across SM3

Homes across SM3, Morden, North Cheam and Benhilton among them, often have one bedroom that has to do two jobs. The design can help one room work two ways, keeping clothes, bedding and everything else out of sight.

About 50% of the homes in SM3 went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 15% between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. About 50% of homes in SM3 date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. About 32% of households in the SM3 postcode district live in terraced houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, which suit fitted furniture.

We make fitted furniture for every kind of home in SM3, from Victorian terraces to new-build flats. The process is the same wherever you are: a design visit, a written quote, then making and fitting.

North Cheam: For families living near Cheam Park Farm Primary Academy, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If your home is one of the older houses near St Oswald Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Parking near your home
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What we need to know

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Any ideas or images you have saved

For a quote for fitted wardrobes in SM3, send us a few details through our contact form. Let us know which room it is and roughly what you have in mind. We will arrange a design visit, then send a written quote.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Under a sloping ceiling, standard wardrobes leave most of the space unused. A fitted wardrobe can be shaped to the ceiling line, with hanging where it is tall and drawers or shelves where it is low.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Will the quote be in writing?

What we do not do

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Electrical work, such as moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster

When is bespoke worth it?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Can you build wardrobes around a bed?

Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. It is planned so there’s room around the bed and the room does not feel enclosed.

What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?

You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves, drawers and shoe space can all be included, in the proportions you need. We talk it through during the design visit.

How do I get started?

Simply fill in our short enquiry form. It helps to send rough measurements and a few pictures, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Will you travel outside London?

No. Our work is in London only: every London borough and the City of London.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will explain what fitting day involves before we start.

Is the furniture made to order?

Each piece is made in our workshop for the room it’s going into, then brought to your home and fitted. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?

It depends on the room. Hinged doors give full access but need clear space in front; sliding doors suit narrow rooms, though only part of the inside is open at once. We will help you weigh them up when we visit.
