Walk-in wardrobes in Shanklin Village: what you get

A walk-in wardrobe gives your clothes a room of their own. We build them in spare rooms, box rooms and corners of bedrooms, with hanging rails, shelving and drawers planned around what you own. Everything is made at our workshop and fitted to the room, scribed to the walls and set level. If your home has proper shoe storage and long and double hanging planned around your clothes, walk-in wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

When floor space is tight, the space over the door and above the bed head is often wasted. Since most households around Shanklin Village live in purpose-built flats, fitted furniture that bridges those spaces is worth considering. Higher cupboards are best for things you use less often.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the walk-in wardrobe designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Shanklin Village

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Shanklin Village?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.

Is Shanklin Village in the area you cover for walk-in wardrobes?

Yes. We cover all of Sutton and the rest of London, and Shanklin Village is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

What happens at the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking.

Do walk-in wardrobes need ventilation?

Yes. A room full of clothes needs air moving through it, particularly against a cooler external wall. The units are designed with ventilation in mind.

Is a box room big enough for a walk-in wardrobe?

In many homes, yes. We can line a small room with hanging, shelving and drawers and still leave room to move. We check the room at the design visit.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. For a flat, the stairs, landings, lift and doors are measured as well as the room: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none, which the design allows for.

  1. You tell us about the room and what you want to store.
  2. We visit to measure up and go through the layout.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
  4. The units are made and finished in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the walk-in wardrobe in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Open rail systems are simple and adaptable, and that has real appeal. A fitted walk-in wardrobe adds doors, drawers and shelves where you want them, in a finish that suits the house. Whether the ceilings are tall or low, standard heights rarely match them, which wastes the space above. Fitted furniture runs to the ceiling.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It’s useful to talk about parking during the design visit.

How we price walk-in wardrobes

Several things affect the price:

  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The internal fittings

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

What we need to know

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Where you live, with the postcode

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Could you do it yourself?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Bedrooms in Shanklin Village: local notes

About 38% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Shanklin Village went up between 1973 and 1999, and about 29% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Shanklin Village include Sutton Lodge (Grade II), under half a mile north-east, and Church of St John (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. Where a home in Shanklin Village is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If your children go to Harris Academy Sutton or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. Close to Manor Park? Keeping walk-in wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. The wider area includes historic houses like Nonsuch Mansion, about 1.6 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
