Wall Beds in Greenwich

From one end of Greenwich to the other, we design and make wall beds for your room. We visit, measure and talk it through before we quote.

Our wall beds across Greenwich

Not every mattress suits every wall bed, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We can go through what the mechanism allows when we measure, so you can choose a mattress that works. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a bed that looks like cupboards by day and a playroom that can sleep visitors.

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You tell us about the room.
  2. We come to measure and go through the bed, the storage and the finish.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. The wall bed is fitted, and any hand painting is done on site.

What goes into your quote

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

Starting with a design visit

In Plumstead, that includes homes near Shooters Hill Sixth Form College, St John's Church and Plumstead Common. Other local landmarks include The Queens Arms (within half a mile north-west), Plumstead Manor School (a few minutes’ walk south-east) and South Rise Primary School (less than half a mile south-east). Homes across Greenwich and their bedrooms

Bedrooms across Greenwich might have alcoves, sloping ceilings, bulkheads or none of these. Wall beds are scribed to the walls and levelled on site. The paint finish, spray-painted or hand-painted, is agreed with you.

Homes built since 2000 make up about 26% of the housing in Greenwich, with about 22% built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. About 26% of homes in Greenwich were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 tend to be compact, with stud walls, so fitted pieces use the full height and are fixed into the studs. Purpose-built flats are home to about 43% of households in Greenwich, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

Greenwich is part of the area we cover, which takes in all 32 boroughs and the City. Let us know about access and parking when you first get in touch.

Plumstead: Near listed buildings like The Old Vicarage, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Plumstead, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Living in a block of flats near Plumstead station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Materials and finishes

Shelves

Shelves can go above or beside the bed cabinet for books, boxes or display.

Moisture-resistant MDF

The moisture-resistant grade suits cabinets on cooler external walls, alongside good ventilation.

Do you need wall beds?

Working from home has changed how many spare rooms are used. The room needs to be an office and still sleep guests, and a fold-down bed lets it do both.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • A storage wall with a bed inside
  • A bed that looks like cupboards by day
  • A hobby room with a bed for guests
  • A guest room that sits empty most of the time

Could you do it yourself?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

Before and after fitting day

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Measure the clear space in front of the wall
  • Tell us what the wall is made of if you know
  • Choose a mattress that suits the mechanism
  • Keep children away while the bed moves

Before you first use the bed, read the mechanism maker’s guidance on lowering and lifting it. Lower it steadily and keep the space in front clear, and don’t let children play with it.

Think about who will sleep in the bed and how often. It shapes the bed size and the type of mechanism, and whether a desk or shelves go around it.

Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?

If you may move soon, a standalone bed you can take with you could suit you better. How long you’ll be in the home is worth weighing up before choosing built-in.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

Questions we are often asked

Will you provide a mattress for the bed?

The mechanism maker sets limits on mattress size and weight. We will explain its limits during the design visit, so you can choose with confidence.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

Everything is made at our workshop for your room, then brought to your home and fitted. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and a written quote follows.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

How much time does fitting need?

It depends on the design. How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?

It depends on the bed size and the mechanism. At the design visit we measure the room and check there’s enough space in front.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
