Wall Beds in Southwark

Wall beds across Southwark: what to expect

Safety starts with the fixing: the mechanism is fixed as its maker specifies, into a wall or floor that’s sound enough to hold it. We check the wall and floor during the design visit as solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings. We make wall beds from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a spare room that’s rarely slept in and more floor space in a studio flat.

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there is clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
  4. We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinet in your home and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
  6. Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.

What affects the price in Southwark

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

Ask for a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Around East Dulwich

Around East Dulwich, we cover homes near Dog Kennel Hill School, The Charter School and Brunswick Park. Other local landmarks include The Latter Rain Outpouring Revival Church (less than half a mile north-east), The Charter School East Dulwich (within half a mile south-east) and The Fox on the Hill pub (close by, under half a mile north-west). There is a railway station in East Dulwich itself: East Dulwich station. Other landmarks nearby include Dulwich Community Hospital (close by, under half a mile south-east) and House of Dreams Museum (within half a mile south-east). Green spaces nearby include Centre for Wildlife Gardening and Knight's Hill.

Homes across Southwark and their bedrooms

Homes across Southwark, East Dulwich, Herne Hill and Bermondsey included, have bedrooms with every kind of quirk. Each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls and floor. The paint finish, spray-painted or hand-painted, is agreed with you.

The biggest shares of homes in Southwark were built since 2000 (about 28%) and before 1919 (about 26%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. About 28% of homes in Southwark were built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted pieces use the full height and are fixed into the studs. Purpose-built flats are home to about 64% of households in Southwark, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

Southwark is part of the area we cover, which takes in all 32 boroughs and the City. If you are unsure about access or parking, mention it when you get in touch.

East Dulwich: If you live in a flat close to East Dulwich station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If you live in a period home close to The Latter Rain Outpouring Revival Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels for a clean, even look.

Bed mechanism housing

A wall bed housing needs to be rigid and true, so it is built from sturdy board. It’s fixed to a sound wall or floor.

How we price wall beds

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The overall size of the piece
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Parking near your home

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Tell us about parking during the design visit.

Getting in touch

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Is bespoke worth it?

Sofa beds cost less and need no fixing, which suits some homes. A wall bed takes a proper mattress and gives back the floor, which matters in a small room.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them at the measuring visit.

Before and after fitting day

Getting the most from wall beds starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Let us know about the wall’s construction
  • Clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth
  • Lower and lift the bed steadily

If the bed ever feels different when you lower or lift it, stop using it and get in touch. Don’t try to adjust the mechanism yourself unless its maker says you can.

Check how much floor there is in front of the cabinet. The bed needs room to fold down, so think about where a chair or desk will go.

Your questions about wall beds in Southwark

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Do you do plastering or decorating?

No. We make, fit and finish the furniture, and plastering and decorating are for other trades. The furniture itself is spray painted or hand painted.

Can you fit a wall bed to a stud wall?

That depends on what the wall and floor are made of. The mechanism must be fixed to a sound wall or floor, as its maker specifies, and we look at this when we measure.

How long does fitting take?

Every room is different. The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

It is made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways during the design visit.

Can a wall bed have storage around it?

Yes. Shelves, cupboards or a desk can go around the bed cabinet with shelves or a desk beside it. We plan it so the bed still has room to come down.
