Wall beds in Brent: how it works
Not every mattress suits every wall bed; the mechanism maker sets the size, depth and weight it can take. We’ll talk through what suits the bed at the measuring visit, so you can choose a mattress that works. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a studio that works by day and night and a guest room that sits empty most of the time.
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You contact us about a wall bed for a spare room or studio.
- We visit to measure the room and the way in, from the front door to the room itself.
- We send a written quote.
- The cabinet is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
- We carry the sections in, assemble them and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
How our quotes work
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
What you get with us
- Edges scribed to follow your walls

Arranging a design visit
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
Near you in Kilburn
In Kilburn, that includes homes near Maida Vale School, Marylebone Boys' School and St Anne's and St Andrew's and the streets around them. Also close by are Queen’s Park (a few minutes’ walk west), Salusbury Primary School (within half a mile west) and The Brondesbury Arms (a few minutes’ walk south-east). There is a railway station in Kilburn itself: Queens Park (London) station. Well-known places in the area include Paddington General Hospital (1 mile south) and Brent Museum and Archives (1.3 miles north-west). Green spaces nearby include Greville Place nature reserve.
Bedroom storage across Brent
We make wall beds for homes across Brent, in Kilburn, Neasden and Harlesden and beyond. External walls can be colder than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whatever it is made of.
In Brent, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 32%) and before 1919 (about 28%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Around a third of the homes in Brent (about 32%) date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. 29 of the 29 places in Brent with their own pages here have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission.
Our area covers the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City, Brent included. Wherever you are, the job starts with a design visit.
Kilburn: For an older house near St Anne's and St Andrew's, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. The wider area includes historic houses such as Winfield House, about 1.7 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.
What affects the cost of wall beds
What you pay depends on:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- The width and height of the space
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Doors and drawers, and how many
Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.
What we need to know
To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:
- Examples of the look you’re after
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.
What we do not do
We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:
- Making good the walls after other work
- Advice on your lease
- New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
Is bespoke worth it?
A normal bed has nothing to fix to the wall, which is a fair point in its favour. But if the room has other jobs to do, a wall bed lets it do them day after day.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you get in touch.
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
What prompts wall beds
The most common reason is a spare room that is rarely slept in. A bed fills the room whether anyone is using it or not, and folding it away gives the room a second life.
If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:
- Shelves or a desk around the bed
- A home office that also sleeps guests
- A bed that fills a little-used room
- A guest bed that disappears in the day
Questions we are often asked
Where is the furniture made?
We make it in our workshop. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.
What space does a fold-down bed take up?
It depends on the bed size and the mechanism. At the design visit we measure the room and check there is enough space in front.
Are fold-down beds safe to use?
Safety depends on a secure fixing and sensible use. We fix the mechanism as its maker specifies, and you keep the space in front clear and children away while it moves.
Will you paint the walls around the furniture?
No. We do not plaster or decorate. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
How much time does fitting need?
Every room is different. The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
Do you supply the mattress?
The mechanism maker sets which mattresses suit the bed, including its size, depth and weight. We will go through those limits at the measuring visit so you can choose one that works.
