How we make wall beds for Bexley

You need room in front of the cabinet to lower the bed, and that shapes the design. We think about where a chair, rug or desk will go, so the bed can come down without a shuffle. If you’re living with a bed that fills a little-used room and more floor space in a studio flat, that is what wall beds are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A good part of the housing around Bexley is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. The main bedroom may have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Pricing wall beds in Bexley

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Parking near your home
  • The width and height of the space
  • How square the room is

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What to send when you contact us

Ahead of the design visit, we will usually ask about:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • How you want to use the space

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough measurements. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

FAQs: wall beds in Bexley

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Bexley?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

I live near Bexley station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Is a wall bed safe for everyday use?

A secure fixing and careful use are what matter. We fix the mechanism as its maker specifies; you lower it steadily with the floor clear.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Bexley homes and wall beds

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 45% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Bexley, with about 31% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Bexley include Parish Church of St John the Evangelist (Grade II), less than half a mile east, and Styleman's Almshouses (Grade II), about 0.5 miles east. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and the rest of London is no exception. If your street in Bexley is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses like Red House, about 0.9 miles north. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. Close to Danson Park? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. For families living near Old Bexley Church of England School, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Design visits and fitting in DA5, DA6, DA14 and DA1 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. We cover homes on streets such as Bexley High Street, Camden Road and The North Glade, along with the roads around them, for wall beds and any of our other fitted furniture. How fitting works for wall beds

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. We come to measure and go through the bed, the storage and the finish.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. We build the cabinets in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly.

Before we arrive

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

How to get a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a written quote. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Why bespoke in Bexley?

A normal bed has nothing to fix to the wall, and that has its appeal. But if the room has other jobs to do, a wall bed lets it do them every day. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Could you do it yourself?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
