Wall beds designed for your room

How we make wall beds for Welling

Many people now work from home in a room that also has to sleep guests. A wall bed with a desk or shelves beside it lets the room do both, without the bed taking over. We can allow for cables to the desk, while new sockets are for your electrician. If you’re living with more floor space in a studio flat and a real mattress for visitors, that’s what wall beds are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

A loft conversion is a common way to add a bedroom to a semi or an interwar house, and the slope can take storage cut to its angle. A big part of the housing around Welling is interwar, semi-detached or detached. We work in lofts that are already converted, and the furniture is scribed to the slope and the walls.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

How we price wall beds

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.

What we need to know

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • How you want to use the space
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Approximate measurements of the space

For a quote for wall beds in Welling, get in touch through our contact form. Let us know which room it is and roughly what you have in mind. We’ll arrange a design visit, then send a quote in writing.

Caring for painted furniture

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Keep the floor in front clear before lowering the bed
  • Think about how often the bed will be used
  • Plan where chairs and desks will sit
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first

Whether bedding can stay on the bed when it folds up depends on the mechanism. Bulky duvets and pillows may need storing nearby.

Measure the space in front of the wall, not just the wall. You need clear space for the bed to come down, so think about where a chair or desk will go.

What happens on fitting day

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so let us know during the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. First, you let us know about the space. Mention who the bed is for.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through the bed, shelves and desk.
  3. A written quote is sent to you.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop.
  5. The wall bed is fitted in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?

Ready-made wall bed units are available and usually cost less, and they can work in a simple space. They’re made in standard sizes, so they may not suit uneven walls, low ceilings or alcoves. Ours is made to the room you have. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and those are common in interwar houses. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

Welling homes and wall beds

About 75% of the homes in the streets around Welling went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 9% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Welling include Danson Park Mansion (Grade I), under half a mile south-east. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. Where a home in Welling is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that at the design visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

For a family home near Danson Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. Close to Danson Park? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. If your home is one of the older houses near St John's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

How it is made

Shelves

Shelf spans and depths are sized so they don’t sag.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which matters for the parts that carry the bed. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Common questions about wall beds

Is Welling in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes, we work across Bexley, Welling included, and across the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Welling?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not typically. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

How much does a wall bed cost?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The bed size, the cabinet and any storage around it all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.
