Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Rowley Green include Trinders Lodge (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Barnet included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Rowley Green, as it does anywhere else in London. We go through parking and access at the design visit.
If you live in a flat close to Elstree & Borehamwood station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If you live near Barnet Gate Wood, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window. For an older house near Holy Cross, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

How we make wall beds for Rowley Green
We build the bed housing from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. From the front, the folded bed can look like a set of tall cupboards, so the room does not read as a bedroom by day. If you are living with a proper bed instead of a sofa bed and a guest room that sits empty most of the time, wall beds made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
Around Rowley Green, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the spare room may be the small one at the front, over the hall and stairs. That’s where wall beds earn their place, making a small room work as a dressing room, a guest room or both. Nothing is assumed: the room is measured wall by wall.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Flats, conversions and lettings
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

How fitting day works
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- You let us know about the room and who the bed is for. The bed can sit among shelves or beside a desk.
- We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of.
- We send a written quote for the bed cabinet and storage, ready to check.
- The bed housing and any shelves are built in our workshop.
- Fitting day: the cabinet is fitted and the bed checked as it lowers and lifts. We show you how the bed works before we leave.
How to prepare
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

How to get a quote
You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Advice
FAQs: wall beds in Rowley Green
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Rowley Green?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Do you make wall beds for homes in Rowley Green?
Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London, and Rowley Green is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
How long will the wall bed take to fit?
How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We’ll talk it through at the design visit.
Will you provide a mattress for the bed?
The mechanism maker sets limits on mattress size and weight. We will explain its limits at the measuring visit, so you can choose with confidence.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Can a wall bed have storage around it?
Yes. Shelves, cupboards or a desk can go around the bed cabinet, so the whole wall is useful. The design keeps clear space in front for the bed to fold down.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?
A standard bed is simple and needs no mechanism, which is a fair point in its favour. But if the room has other jobs to do, a wall bed lets it do them every day. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and interwar homes often have all three. Fitted furniture is made around them.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.
