Wall beds in Hendon: what you get
A wall bed needs clear space in front of it to fold down, and that shapes the design. Furniture in front of the bed has to be easy to move or kept out of the way when the bed is down. If your home has somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep and a hobby room with a bed for guests, that is what wall beds are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
The front bedroom in many 1920s and 1930s houses sits above a bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing around Hendon, so it’s a room shape worth planning for. Every wall is measured, as a room that looks square rarely is.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Questions from Hendon
Is parking a problem for fitting in Hendon?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Do you cover homes near Hendon station?
Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Is it possible to add a desk beside the wall bed?
Yes. Shelves, cupboards or a desk can go around the bed cabinet with shelves or a desk beside it. We plan it so the bed still has room to come down.
Honest limits
It’s useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:
- Structural work to the wall or floor
- Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
- Making good the walls after other work
If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

Fitting day, step by step
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.
- You let us know about the room and who the bed is for.
- We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of.
- A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
- We build and finish everything in our workshop.
- Fitting day: the cabinet is fitted and the bed checked as it lowers and lifts.
Getting ready for fitting day

Advice
Is it time for wall beds?
In a studio or a small flat, every bit of floor counts. With the bed away, the main room is a living space again until bedtime.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- A guest bed that disappears in the day
- More floor space in a studio flat
- Storage built around a fold-down bed
- A flexible room for a growing family

Choosing a carpenter
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
Materials and finishes
Spray-painted finish
We spray paint in the workshop for a smooth, factory-like finish.
Hand-painted finish
If you’d like the bed to match the skirting or doors, hand painting works well.
Bedroom storage in Hendon
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Hendon were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 45%) and before 1919 (about 20%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). What else we make in Hendon
Could you do it yourself?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
