Fitted home offices designed for your room
How we make fitted home offices for Rowley Green
Where the window sits affects how comfortable the desk will be. A screen facing a window can be hard to read, and a window behind you can cause glare. We plan the desk position with the window in mind, often with the light to one side. We look at it early at the design visit in Rowley Green. If your home has work things on show in the evening and a laptop that moves from room to room, home offices made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.
In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Rowley Green, if the loft has been converted, the space under the eaves can take a desk and storage. We build in lofts that are already converted or boarded. Or a desk can sit in an alcove or a bay.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
Where other trades come in
Not everything around fitted home offices is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Turning an unconverted loft into a room
- Setting up computers, screens or networks
- Structural work, like removing walls or chimney breasts

Boards, parts and paint
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish works well on every part of the office. We do it in our workshop, where the finish can be kept even. Any paint colour agreed with you can be used.
Hand-painted finish
Some people prefer a hand-painted finish for its softer look. It can be applied on site, in a colour agreed with you. It can be matched to the room’s woodwork.
Built-in desks and shelving in Rowley Green
About 35% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Rowley Green went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 33% between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for home offices, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Rowley Green, Historic England’s list includes Trinders Lodge (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-east. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Barnet sets its own rules. Depending on your street in Rowley Green, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Tell us what the parking is like at the design visit.
If you live in a flat close to Elstree & Borehamwood station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. For an older house near Holy Cross, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. If you live near Barnet Gate Wood, a desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day.

Questions from Rowley Green
I live near Elstree & Borehamwood station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Rowley Green?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Is it possible to have a desk under the eaves?
Yes, if the loft is already a converted room. We plan around the headroom, so the desk sits where you can stand up. Lower areas can take cupboards and shelves.
Do I get to choose the colour?
The choice is yours. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.
Can you fit sockets in the desk?
Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, not us. The desk is planned with routes for cables and space for any sockets. It helps to agree the positions during the design visit.
Fitting day, step by step
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Interwar houses normally have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Home offices arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.
- You get in touch with some details about the room. A line on how you work helps too.
- We visit to measure and talk about the equipment you use.
- A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed.
- We make the desk, shelves and cupboards in our workshop.
- The office is fitted and set level, ready for your first day at the desk.
Before fitting day
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Advice
How we price fitted home offices
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Parking and unloading on your street
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.
What to send when you contact us
When you contact us, these help most:
- Your postcode and the borough
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, get in touch through our contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.
