Wall beds for your home in Upper Ruxley

About our wall beds in Upper Ruxley

Many spare rooms are only just big enough for a bed, and a bed that’s used a few times a year takes most of the floor. A wall bed gives that floor back during the day, ready for work, exercise or play. When guests come, the bed folds down. We make wall beds from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are a real mattress for visitors and a storage wall with a bed inside.

Post-war housing makes up a good share of the homes around Upper Ruxley, and in London that can mean houses or flats in blocks. Ceiling heights are often lower than in older homes, and the proportions of wall beds follow the room. For a flat, the furniture comes in sections sized for the stairs and lift.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Boards, parts and paint

Bed mechanism housing

The mechanism sets the size of the housing and the bed size you choose.

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters, which matters for the parts that carry the bed. The edge can be left on show or painted.

Questions from Upper Ruxley

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Upper Ruxley?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.

I live near Swanley station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?

The bed needs room in front of it to come down, as well as the depth of the cabinet itself. We check the space when we measure, so the design works.

What happens during the design visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a quote in writing follows.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

Practical tips

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Let us know about the wall’s construction
  • Plan where chairs and desks will sit
  • Lower and lift the bed steadily

Check the mattress stays within the limits the mechanism maker sets, as a heavier one can affect how the bed balances. If you change the mattress later, check it against those limits.

If you know the wall’s construction, mention it. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard need different fixings, and we check it during the design visit too.

Do you need wall beds in Upper Ruxley?

The most common reason is a spare room that’s rarely slept in. A standard bed takes up the floor all the time, and folding it away gives the room a second life.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • More floor space in a studio flat
  • A bed that looks like cupboards by day
  • A storage wall with a bed inside
  • Room for a desk and a guest bed

If you live near Foots Cray Meadows, wall beds are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • How they handle walls that are not straight

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking near post-war estates can depend on residents’ bays and estate rules, so let us know what applies at the design visit. Fitting day is the sections coming in, being joined and fixed in place. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You let us know about the room.
  2. We come to measure and talk through the bed, the storage and the finish.
  3. You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the cabinets in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly.

Before fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
