How we make TV and media units for Upper Ruxley

Where the TV will be wall-mounted, the unit is designed around where the bracket goes, with a route for the cables behind the screen. If it stands on the unit, we size the top to suit. Typical reasons to get in touch are nowhere good for speakers and games, controllers and remotes everywhere; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In many houses from the 1950s and 1960s, the living room has a wide window and a plain chimney breast or none at all. Many homes around Upper Ruxley date from those decades, and TV and media units can give a room like that a focus. A run of low cupboards with shelving above can sit under or beside the window, leaving any radiator clear.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

How fitting day works

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Estates sometimes have their own parking rules alongside the council’s, so it is useful to tell us at the measuring visit. Fitting day is the sections coming in, being joined and fixed in place. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and list what the unit has to take: the screen, boxes, consoles and speakers.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable openings and vents cut in.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.

Boards, parts and paint

Plinths and scribe strips

Period walls typically need scribing. It makes the unit look built in.

Shelves

Speakers and books suit open shelves, while cupboards hide the rest.

Why bespoke in Upper Ruxley?

Bought units often have a single cable gap, but cables usually still show somewhere. A built-in unit has routes planned through it. In a plain post-war room, standalone pieces stand proud of the wall with nothing to frame them, while a fitted run can create its own recesses.

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It’s useful to talk about parking during the design visit.

TV and media units for homes in Upper Ruxley

In the neighbourhood around Upper Ruxley, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 51%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 20%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Upper Ruxley include Old Church of St Botolph (Grade II), under half a mile west, and Ruxley Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 51% of homes in the neighbourhood around Upper Ruxley were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Rooms from that era are often squarer, with fewer alcoves and sometimes no chimney breast, so a full wall of TV and media units is often the answer, with fixings chosen for the wall.

Close to Foots Cray Meadows? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. If you live in a period home close to St Botolph's Church, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

Your questions about TV and media units in Upper Ruxley

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Swanley station?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Upper Ruxley?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it is useful to be around at the end.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

What happens at the design visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

How do I get a quote?

Just use our contact form. It’s useful to send rough measurements and a few photos, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

What prompts TV and media units in Upper Ruxley

Games, controllers and remotes need a home. Drawers and cupboards hold them out of sight, and open shelves hold what’s used every day.

People typically get in touch with us about things like these:

  • Bought furniture that does not suit the room
  • Boxes and consoles on the floor
  • A tangle of wires behind the TV
  • Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste

The wider area includes historic houses such as Hall Place and Gardens, about 2.7 miles north. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
