Need wall beds in Bromley?

How we make wall beds for Bromley

You need room in front of the cabinet to lower the bed, and that shapes the design. Furniture in front of the bed has to be easy to move or kept out of the way when the bed is down. We make wall beds from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a home office that also sleeps guests and a guest bed that disappears in the day.

In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, bedrooms range from box rooms to large rooms with bays and sloping ceilings. Wall beds can work in any of them, from a small spare room to a main bedroom. Nothing is assumed to be square, so the room is measured carefully.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the wall bed we have designed for the room, what it is made from and how it is finished.

What affects the price in Bromley

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • The width and height of the space
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • The internal fittings

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

What to send when you get in touch

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

To get a quote, message us from the contact page and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and a written quote follows.

How fitting day works

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.

  1. First, you let us know about the room and how you’d like it to work.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room, look at the wall and discuss the design.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinet, the storage and the finish, for you to look over.
  4. We build and finish the bed housing and storage in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.

Preparing the room

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Starting with a design visit

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, drop us a line using the contact form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Advice

Fitted bedroom furniture in Bromley

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Bromley were built before 1919 (about 37%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Within a mile of the centre of Bromley, 6 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. Where a home in Bromley is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Peter and St Paul, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live near Church House Gardens, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. If you live in a flat close to Bromley South station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.

Looking after your furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Keep the floor in front clear before lowering the bed
  • Think about how often the bed will be used
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Check mattress size and weight limits

Should the bed start to move differently, stop and let us know. Do not try to adjust the mechanism yourself unless its maker says you can.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.

Questions we are often asked

My home in Bromley is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Wall beds are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Bromley?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can a wall bed have storage around it?

Yes. Shelves, cupboards or a desk can go around the bed cabinet, so the whole wall is useful. We plan it so the bed still has room to come down.

How long does fitting take?

Every room is different. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
