Window seats for your home in Carshalton

How we make window seats for Carshalton

A window seat turns the light by a window into a place to sit. We design and make window seats for bays, sash windows and recesses, normally with storage below, under a lift-up lid or in drawers. In Carshalton, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. If you are living with unused space below a sash window and a radiator under the window getting in the way, window seats made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Carshalton, the hall is often wide enough for coat and shoe storage. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Each space is measured and window seats are made to suit it.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the window seat designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:

  • Plumbing work on the radiator under the window
  • Fabric covers and cushions
  • Plastering and decorating around the seat

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Making use of awkward spaces in Carshalton

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 39% of the housing in the area around Carshalton, with about 18% built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 74 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Carshalton. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If you live on or close to a main road in Carshalton, let us know at the measuring visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

The wider area includes historic houses like Nonsuch Mansion, about 2.7 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front. Close to Carshalton Park? Window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. For a flat near Carshalton station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Carshalton is about 1 mile west of Sutton, within the London Borough of Sutton. From period terraces to newer flats in Carshalton, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Carshalton is one of the places in Sutton where we make window seats.

If your home is on a street such as Station Road, High Street and The Square, or close by, we can arrange a design visit for window seats. Carshalton is near the B277 and B278; on busy main roads, unloading window seats takes a little planning. Fitting day, step by step

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You send us a note about the window and the seat you’d like.
  2. At the design visit we agree the seat and talk about colour, with a choice of spray painting or hand painting.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the seat in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the finish you chose.
  5. The seat is fitted and scribed, and any hand painting is done on site.
  6. Fresh paint takes a while to cure, so go gently with the seat and lids at first.

Advice

When is bespoke worth it?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF because it is stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It suits the fronts, panels and grilles of a window seat. The moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice next to a window.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done in your home after fitting. It is easy to touch up if it gets marked. It suits a seat that sees daily use.

Is bespoke worth it?

One advantage of a standalone bench is that it can go with you. A fitted seat is designed to stay, and it uses the space in a way a standalone piece cannot. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall usually ends with a gap, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can use the full height too.

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Your questions about window seats in Carshalton

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Carshalton?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Carshalton affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you send us a few details through our contact form.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

It’s something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.

What happens at the design visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and a quote in writing follows.
