What we don’t do
We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:
- Electrical work around the seat
- Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
- Fabric covers and cushions
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Window seats in Shanklin Village: what you get
The storage under a window seat is often as useful as the seat itself. A lift-up lid opens the whole space beneath the seat, while drawers mean you do not have to move a cushion to reach things. We’ll talk through which suits the way you use the room. If your home has standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay and unused space below a sash window, that is what window seats are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Shanklin Village, and in a flat, the hall, the recesses and the windows are where extra storage typically goes. Window seats are made in sections that fit the stairs, lift and doors, then assembled in place. If a boiler or consumer unit sits in a cupboard, it keeps its clearances and access.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the window seat designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

Before and after fitting day
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Clear the bay or window area before the design visit
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
- Check the shutters so the seat can leave room for them
- Consider how often you will reach for what’s stored
If you’re having a cushion made, we’ll give you the exact size of the seat. Let the paint cure before the cushion goes on, to protect both the fabric and the finish.
Lift lids gently and lower them carefully. That protects the hinges and the paint. Don’t overfill drawers, as heavy loads strain the runners.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Off-the-shelf benches come in the maker’s finishes. We paint the seat in the colour you choose, so it sits with the skirting, the shutters or the walls. Ready-made units can’t follow the boxing and risers found in many flats, so it ends up with gaps or blocks access. Built-in pieces are designed around them, with access kept.
There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing. To start, use our contact form.

How fitting works for window seats
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: window seats are made in sections sized for each of them. Mansion block lifts can be small, and some blocks have no lift at all.
- To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the bay or sash window is enough.
- We visit to measure up and work out how warm air from the radiator will reach the room.
- Your written quote sets out the seat, the grille, the materials and the finish.
- In our workshop the seat is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the grille made to match.
- We fit it in your home and scribe it to the walls, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Starting with a design visit
The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.

Your questions about window seats in Shanklin Village
Do you cover homes near Belmont station?
Yes. We cover all of Sutton and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room.
Do you make window seats for homes in Shanklin Village?
Yes, Shanklin Village is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Sutton and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not usually. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.
Should I choose a lift-up lid or drawers?
Often a mix works best. Drawers suit things you use often, and a lid suits bulky items. For children’s rooms, drawers are normally easier to manage. We will suggest a layout during the design visit.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Storage in Shanklin Village homes: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Shanklin Village were built between 1973 and 1999 (about 38%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 29%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Shanklin Village is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Sutton included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Shanklin Village. We plan parking and access with you at the measuring visit.
If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St John, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Sutton Lodge, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If you live in a flat close to Belmont station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.
