Window Seats in Roundshaw

Thinking about window seats in Roundshaw? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • A ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay
  • Looking for a reading spot by the window
  • A nursery or bedroom short of storage

Ask about window seats in Roundshaw

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

About our window seats in Roundshaw

A window seat can be part of a larger piece of furniture. Shelving on each side, with the seat in the middle, makes a natural reading spot. We design the seat and the surrounding units together, so the lines and the finish match. We can discuss the options when we visit in Roundshaw. Typical reasons to get in touch are looking for a reading spot by the window and nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In a home built since 2000, there are often spaces the builder left plain, like a recess, a landing corner or an empty cupboard. Many homes around Roundshaw date from 2000 onwards, so spaces like that are worth a second look. The layout inside is planned to use the full depth.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

What window seats can’t fix

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Any change to radiator pipes, which needs a plumber
  • Repairs to sash windows, cills or shutters
  • Fabric covers and cushions

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Lift-up lids or drawers
  • Radiator grilles
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish

What it costs

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, use our contact form.

What to send when you get in touch

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • How you want to use the space

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. When you’re ready, send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Window seats in Roundshaw: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Roundshaw were built since 2000 (about 40%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 27%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how window seats are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Roundshaw, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Michael and All Angels (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north-west, and Church of St Mark (Grade II), about 0.6 miles south. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling can need listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 40% of homes around Roundshaw were built since 2000, well above the figure for Sutton as a whole, about 13%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Newer homes often have stud walls and compact rooms, so fixings and sizes are planned with that in mind.

If you live near Waddon Ponds, window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. Living in a block of flats near Wallington station? Then window seats are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If your children go to Wallington Primary Academy or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Questions we’re often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in Roundshaw?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you make window seats for a home in Roundshaw?

Yes. Roundshaw is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Sutton and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.

How much does a window seat cost?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The size of the window, the storage and the finish all shape the price. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

How fitting works for window seats

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so tell us what applies at the measuring visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the bay or sash window is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the window and the radiator, and plan a grille or open front so heat is not trapped.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the seat and the grille.
  4. In our workshop the seat is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the grille made to match.
  5. The seat is fitted with the radiator grille in place, so the heat keeps moving.

Before we arrive

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Let us know about parking near your home

Tips worth knowing

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Let us know about the radiator before we visit
  • Think about the cushion you’d like and who will make it
  • Choose a colour that suits the room
  • Note whether your window has working shutters

If you are having a cushion made, we’ll give you the exact size of the seat. Wait until the paint has cured before putting the cushion on, to protect both the fabric and the finish.

Use a step rather than standing on the seat. The seat is made for sitting, and standing puts weight in one spot. A little care keeps it looking good.
