Window seats in Chingford Hatch

In many period houses, a bay window is the obvious place for a seat. Bays have angled sides, and their walls are seldom square or flat. Each side is measured and the seat is scribed to fit, so the seat follows the bay exactly. It’s the kind of space where a ready-made bench never quite fits. Typical reasons to get in touch are a nursery or bedroom short of storage and wanting a seat without blocking the radiator, and the answer is built in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a family house, the hall and stairs usually carry the most clutter. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around Chingford Hatch, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Questions from Chingford Hatch

Do you cover homes near Highams Park station?

Yes. We cover all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Chingford Hatch?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Which materials go into your window seats?

The seat is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The frame and seat top are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, and MDF takes paint well for the fronts and grilles. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you.

How we price window seats

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Parking near your home
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

Helping us understand the room

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. When you contact us, it is useful to send:

  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough sizes. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Interwar houses normally have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. Window seats arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the window, and whether a radiator sits beneath it.
  2. At the design visit we measure the window and the radiator, and plan a grille or open front so heat is not trapped.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the seat and the grille.
  4. In our workshop the seat is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the grille made to match.
  5. We fit it in your home and scribe it to the walls, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before fitting day

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Ask for a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

Flats, conversions and lettings

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

The problems window seats solve

A quiet place to read is a common wish. A seat by the window, with books nearby, makes a natural reading corner. It’s often the most-used seat in the house.

Here’s what window seats can help with:

  • Wanting a seat without blocking the radiator
  • Off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window
  • Needing more storage in the room
  • A bay with no furniture that fits

Near listed buildings like Friday Hill House, less than half a mile north of the centre of Chingford Hatch, older homes may keep original joinery that window seats can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Where they’ll park and unload

Looking after your furniture

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Note whether your window has working shutters
  • Plan the cushion early so the seat suits it
  • Note the position of any radiator and its pipes
  • Consider adding shelving around the seat

Before we leave, we check every lid and drawer with you. Any grille is checked so the radiator can still warm the room. That way, everything works as planned.

Open and close lids with care, rather than letting them drop. It keeps the hinges and edges in good order. Don’t overfill drawers, as heavy loads strain the runners.
