How we make walk-in wardrobes for Chingford Hatch

Beyond the hanging, drawers, shelves and shoe storage do a lot of the work. Folded knitwear sits well on shelves, smaller things go in drawers and shoes can have racks or shelves of their own. If the room allows, we can include a dressing table. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are room for a growing wardrobe and long and double hanging planned around your clothes.

Around Chingford Hatch, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. The main bedroom may have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the walk-in wardrobe designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

When you need someone else

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Advice on your lease
  • Fixing the cause of damp
  • Structural changes or removing walls

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it’s made from

  • Shoe storage
  • Birch plywood
  • Hanging, shelves and drawers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Dressing table
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Fitting day, step by step

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know at the measuring visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. We come to measure and go through the design.
  3. You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the walk-in wardrobe in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units and trim the edges to meet the walls and ceiling.
  6. Before we leave we go through the doors and drawers with you; new paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Before fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Arranging a design visit

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, message us from the contact page.

Questions we’re often asked

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Chingford Hatch?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Is Chingford Hatch in the area you cover for walk-in wardrobes?

Yes. We cover all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London, and Chingford Hatch is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.

Is ventilation important in a dressing room?

Yes, it helps keep clothes fresh and damp away. We design the units to let air move, and any damp on the walls should be sorted before fitting.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

Chingford Hatch homes and walk-in wardrobes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 49% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Chingford Hatch, with about 20% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Chingford Hatch. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Chingford Hatch. We go through parking and access at the design visit.

If you live in a flat close to Highams Park station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If you live near The Highams Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window. If your home is one of the older houses near All Saints Church of England Highams Park, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.

Caring for painted furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Count your coats and long garments
  • Decide on doors or open storage before we measure
  • Make sure walls are dry before units go in
  • Give the paint time to cure fully

If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can be touched in. Spray-painted finishes are smooth and even, and clean easily with a soft cloth.

If you want a partition to create the walk-in wardrobe, talk to a builder first. We make and fit the units inside.

What it is made from

Hand-painted finish

Some people like the character of a hand-painted finish in an older home.

Shelves

Shoes can have shelves of their own planned around your shoes.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.
