Hampton Hill Window Seats

Planning window seats for a home in Hampton Hill? We start with a design visit and a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • Wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room
  • Nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books
  • A radiator that makes the space hard to use

Window seats in Hampton Hill

Window seats in Hampton Hill

A window seat can be part of a larger piece of furniture. Bookshelves either side of a window, with a seat between, make a quiet place to read. The seat and the units around it are designed as one, so the lines and the finish match. It is worth talking through at the measuring visit in Hampton Hill. If you’re living with wanting a seat without blocking the radiator and no comfortable place to sit in the light, that is what window seats are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A deep cupboard can lose things at the back, so drawers, lift-up lids or shallow shelves are chosen to suit the space. For a home in Hampton Hill, what works depends on how deep and how tall the space is. Any meters, fuse board or boiler keep the access they need.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

From workshop to your room

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Before fitting day, we check the route in along with the room itself, so window seats arrive in sections that fit through. We cover floors and doorways on the way in.

  1. It starts when you get in touch about a window seat. Say how you’d like to use it, if you know.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the window, the radiator and what you need. Shutters and cills are noted too.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. Read it through and ask if anything is unclear.
  4. Your window seat is made in our workshop, shaped to the window.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use.

How to prepare

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Arranging a design visit

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Common questions about window seats

Do you make window seats for homes in Hampton Hill?

Yes, we work across Richmond upon Thames, Hampton Hill included, and across the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Hampton Hill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Bespoke window seats or ready-made?

A standalone bench can be moved, which is useful if you rent or plan to move soon. A fitted seat is designed to stay, and it uses the space in a way a standalone piece can’t. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay. A standard unit is the same in every home, whatever the room is like, while fitted furniture is drawn for the room it goes into. It can be painted in a colour chosen for that room.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Why us?

  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Work across the whole of London

The problems window seats solve

For a child’s room, a seat under the window adds storage and a cosy spot. Drawers keep toys within easy reach. It helps keep the room tidy.

Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:

  • A bay with no furniture that fits
  • Nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books
  • Wanting a quiet place to read
  • A nursery or bedroom short of storage

For a flat near Fulwell station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home

Flats, leases and landlords

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

Making use of tricky spaces in Hampton Hill

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Hampton Hill were built before 1919 (about 41%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 21%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Hampton Hill, Historic England’s list includes Templeton Lodge (Grade II), under half a mile north-east, and Upper Lodge (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. All of London, Richmond upon Thames included, is inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Hampton Hill is covered by it. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.

For a family home near Hampton Hill Junior School, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. The wider area includes historic houses such as Strawberry Hill House, about 1.2 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear.

Hampton Hill is part of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, about 2 miles north-east of Twickenham. We design and make window seats for homes in Hampton Hill and across Richmond upon Thames. In Richmond upon Thames, Hampton Hill is one of the places we cover, and the borough has 19 places on our list.

Every address in TW12, TW11 and TW2 is within our area for window seats, from the main roads to the quieter streets. You will find streets here such as Mays Road, Park Road and Holly Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for window seats. Main roads around Hampton Hill include the A311 and A313. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. We also cover the places around Hampton Hill: Fulwell (1 mile north-east), Hampton (1 mile west), Teddington (1 mile east), Hanworth (1 mile west) and Strawberry Hill (1 mile north-east). Other parts of Richmond upon Thames we cover include Twickenham (2 miles north-east), Richmond (3 miles north-east), Richmond upon Thames (4 miles north-east), Barnes (6 miles north-east), Kew (5 miles north-east) and Mortlake (5 miles north-east).

When you need someone else

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Repairs to sash windows, cills or shutters
  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • New sockets or lights near the window, which are for your electrician

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
