How we price window seats
A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- The number of doors and drawers
- How big the furniture is
- Spray painting or hand painting
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.
Helping us understand the room
These details help when you get in touch:
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Window seats for homes in Teddington
The storage under a window seat is often as useful as the seat itself. A lift-up lid is simple and gives access to the full depth, while drawers are easier to reach if there’s a cushion on top. We will talk through which suits the way you use the room. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room and a sash window with space beneath it going to waste.
Hallways in period terraces are often long and narrow, with the stairs rising along one wall. A large share of the homes around Teddington were built before 1919, so depth matters as much as width wherever storage goes. Even shallow storage can hold a lot without narrowing the way through.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how window seats are fixed and fitted. 18 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Teddington. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Many London terraces have a bay or sash windows, good places for a seat with storage.

For a flat near Teddington station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

From workshop to your room
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays at the measuring visit.
- You send us a note about the window and the seat you’d like.
- At the design visit we agree the seat and talk about colour, with a choice of spray painting or hand painting.
- A quote in writing follows, with the finish written in.
- We build the seat in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the finish you chose.
- The seat is fitted and scribed, and any hand painting is done on site.
- Fresh paint takes a while to cure, so go gently with the seat and lids at first.
How to prepare
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
Getting a quote
Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
Advice
Questions from Teddington
Can you make window seats for a home in Teddington?
Yes, Teddington is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Teddington?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Typically not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit.
Could you do it yourself?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
