Hanworth Window Seats
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on window seats in Hanworth starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.
- A period room that needs furniture to suit it
- A bay with no furniture that fits
- A nursery or bedroom short of storage

Window seats in Hanworth: what you get
A well-made window seat gives you a place to sit in the best light in the room. Our window seats are made for bays, sash windows and the recesses beside them, normally with storage below, under a lift-up lid or in drawers. In Hanworth, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. People normally come to us about wanting a seat without blocking the radiator and a bay window that’s hard to furnish, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Many post-war homes have a boiler in a hall, kitchen or landing cupboard. Any new cupboard around it keeps the clearances its manufacturer sets out. With many homes around Hanworth built between 1945 and the early 1970s, that is one of the things we check at the measuring visit. Work on the boiler itself is for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Do you need window seats in Hanworth?
Storage is another big reason. A seat with a lift-up lid or drawers can hold toys, blankets, books or games. It adds storage in a space you’re not otherwise using.
If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:
- No comfortable place to sit in the light
- A radiator under the window getting in the way
- An empty bay that does not get used
- A ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay
The wider area includes historic houses like Strawberry Hill House, about 2 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat.
Before you choose who makes it
- Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- How parking will work on your street
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
Pricing window seats in Hanworth
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.
What we need to know
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Approximate measurements of the space
To make a start, get in touch through our contact form and tell us a little about the room. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
Questions from Hanworth
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Hanworth?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
What materials do you use for window seats?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. A moisture-resistant grade suits a spot by a window, where condensation can form. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
What happens at the design visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and a written quote follows.
Will a window seat work below a sash window?
Yes. The seat is set below the cill so the window can still open and close. Where there are shutters, the seat is planned so they still open fully. We check all of this at the measuring visit.
Fitting day, step by step
In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Parking near post-war estates can depend on residents’ bays and estate rules, so it helps to tell us at the design visit. Fitting day is the sections coming in, being joined and fixed in place. Saturdays can be arranged.
- It starts when you get in touch about a window seat. Say how you’d like to use it, if you know.
- We visit to measure and talk about how you’ll use the seat. Shutters and cills are noted too.
- A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed. Read it through and ask if anything is unclear.
- We make the seat, the lids or drawers and any grille in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The seat is fitted and set level, ready for a cushion, with the lids or drawers checked with you.
Before fitting day
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
Getting a quote
It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough sizes. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.
Advice
Why bespoke in Hanworth?
One advantage of a standalone bench is that it can go with you. Fitted seats stay with the house, and they make more of the window. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay. Fixing standalone furniture to concrete or blockwork can be tricky, while fitted furniture is planned with the right fixings from the start. It matters most for tall cupboards and full shelves.
We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Window seats for homes in Hanworth
Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 35% of the housing in the streets around Hanworth, with about 31% built between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how window seats are fixed and fitted. The Hanworth Road Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Hanworth. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. Fewer homes around Hanworth date from before 1919 than across Richmond upon Thames: about 5%, against about 38%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We check what the walls are made of at the design visit, as they vary with the age of the home.
If you live in a flat close to Hampton station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If you live near Crane Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place.

When you need someone else
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:
- Any wiring, which needs an electrician
- Painting the walls of the bay
- Making the seat cushion, which isn’t our work
