Whitton Window Seats

Thinking about window seats in Whitton? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing.

  • Unused space below a sash window
  • A radiator under the window getting in the way
  • No space for toys and games

Window seats designed for your room

About our window seats in Whitton

We make each window seat in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the seat its strength, as it is strong and holds screws firmly, and MDF gives the fronts and panels a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s brought to your home in Whitton and fitted. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a radiator that makes the space hard to use and unused space below a sash window.

Landings in houses from between the wars are often roomier than in a Victorian terrace, and that space can take shallow fitted storage. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Whitton, the landing is worth a look as well as the hall. Any boiler or hot water cylinder keeps the access and ventilation its maker asks for.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

What we do not do

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Fixing the window itself
  • Painting the walls of the bay
  • Seat cushions, which you source separately

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What it is made from

  • Lift-up lids or drawers
  • Radiator grilles
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish

Flats, conversions and lettings

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.

Fitting day, step by step

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch about a window seat.
  2. At the design visit we agree the seat and talk about colour, with a choice of spray painting or hand painting.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish written in.
  4. The seat is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is done there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. The seat is fitted and scribed, and any hand painting is done on site.
  6. Fresh paint takes a while to cure, so go gently with the seat and lids at first.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Getting a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

What it costs

What you pay depends on:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How square the room is
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.

Getting in touch

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It’s useful to include:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, use our contact form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Questions from Whitton

Do you cover homes near Whitton station?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is Whitton in the area you cover for window seats?

Yes, we work across Richmond upon Thames, Whitton included, and across the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.

What does a bespoke window seat cost?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. It depends on the size and shape of the window, the storage you want and the finish. For a quote, drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Is bespoke worth it?

Bespoke seats are scribed to the walls and set level, so it fits neatly at the walls and floor. A bench simply sits in front of the window. The difference is most noticeable in a period room. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall typically ends with a gap, which fitted furniture avoids. It can use the full height too.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
