Need window seats in Islington?
From workshop to your room
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.
- First we hear about your bay or window and what you’d like, with a note of any radiator or shutters.
- We measure the window, the cill and any radiator or shutters. Then we discuss the seat height and storage.
- The design is agreed and a written quote follows.
- The seat is built in our workshop and painted in your colour. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The seat is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you.
Before fitting day
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Tell us about parking near your home
Starting with a design visit
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
Advice
How we make window seats for Islington
A radiator under the window is common, and a seat has to work with it. A seat built over a radiator needs a grille or an open front, so the heat is not trapped. We design the grille into the front of the seat and leave space around the radiator. When we visit in Islington, we’ll check the radiator and plan around it. Most enquiries start with looking for a reading spot by the window and wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are usually solid brick, which can be cold, so storage against it is designed with ventilation behind. That matters around Islington, where a large share of the homes are that old. Damp should be sorted before anything is fitted against the wall.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Before and after fitting day
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. These habits help most:
- Check the shutters so the seat can leave room for them
- Note the position of any radiator and its pipes
- Let us know about parking at the design visit
- Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
We can give you the seat measurements for a cushion maker. Wait until the paint has cured before putting the cushion on, so the fabric doesn’t stick or mark the finish.
Do not block the grille with cushions or things stored in front of it. Keeping it clear helps the radiator work as it should. Storage over a radiator stays warm, so it is best for things that don’t mind it.
What it is made from
Lift-up lids
With a lift-up lid, the whole space beneath the seat opens up. It suits blankets, toys and things you do not need every day. We make the lid to open and close cleanly.
Pull-out drawers
Drawers can run the full width or be combined with a lid. Where there’s a radiator, the drawers are planned around it. We agree the layout at the design visit.

Could you do it yourself?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Common questions about window seats
I live in a flat in Islington. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Window seats are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
I live near Essex Road station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover the whole of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.
Who chooses the colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it is set out in the quote.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Do you need window seats in Islington?
A quiet place to read is a common wish. A window seat, perhaps with shelves either side, does exactly that. It is often the most-used seat in the house.
Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:
- A bay window that’s hard to furnish
- No space for toys and games
- A period room that needs furniture to suit it
- A radiator under the window getting in the way
Near listed buildings like Union Chapel, under half a mile north of the centre of Islington, older homes may keep original joinery that window seats can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- A written quote that sets out the job
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
Window seats in Islington: local notes
In the area around Islington, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 49%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 16%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 389 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Islington. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Purpose-built flats are home to about 56% of households in the neighbourhood around Islington, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, window seats are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
If you live in a flat close to Essex Road station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. Dr Johnson's House, about 1.6 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front.
