Fitted wardrobes in NW1: how it works

Fitted wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Doors and panels are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use and no space in front for doors to swing.

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

Fitted wardrobes across NW1: local notes

Many older bedrooms across NW1 keep a chimney breast with an alcove on each side. In rooms without one, a full wall of storage often works best. Each design is scribed and levelled on site.

The biggest shares of homes in NW1 were built before 1919 (about 42%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 19%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. About 42% of homes in NW1 were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths, scribed to walls that are not straight. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 21% of households in NW1, according to Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

We cover the whole of London, so homes in NW1 are well within our area. If you are unsure about access or parking, mention it when you contact us.

Camden Town: If you live in a period home close to St Michael's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. The wider area includes historic houses like Winfield House, about 1.2 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

A sprayed coat covers edges, corners and panels evenly for a smooth finish. The colour is agreed at the design stage.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting lets you judge the colour in the room as it goes on. Scribed edges and joins are painted along with the rest.

Looking after your furniture

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Let us know about any damp you’ve seen on bedroom walls
  • List the things that will not hang, like jumpers and shoes
  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting

With sliding doors, vacuum the track now and then. Don’t let shoes or bags sit in the track.

Keep any ventilation gaps clear. Watch for musty smells or marks on clothes and have the cause looked at early.

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

Sometimes it is a change in how a room is used. Fitted wardrobes give it proper storage while leaving space to move. Inside, the layout can change as needs change.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • A bedroom that never feels tidy
  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way

What it costs

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Helping us understand the room

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

To get a quote for fitted wardrobes in NW1, get in touch through our contact form. Let us know the room and the rough idea, plus any rough measurements. We’ll arrange a design visit, then send a written quote.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bought wardrobes come in the maker’s finishes. Fitted wardrobes are painted in a colour agreed with you. Bespoke work does take longer than buying from a shop, since there’s a design visit, a quote and workshop time first.

What to check before you book

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Will the quote be in writing?

Questions we are often asked

Do you do the electrics?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?

Yes, with ventilation planned in. External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we plan airflow behind and within it to help avoid condensation and mould.

Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?

That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense, while hinged doors suit rooms with space to open them. We look at it with you when we measure.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Is it possible to have storage over the bed?

Yes. Storage around a bed makes good use of a wall that’s often wasted. We measure the bed and the room at the measuring visit.

Do you do plastering or decorating?

No. We don’t plaster or decorate. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.
