Fitting day, step by step

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it is useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You let us know about your converted or boarded loft, including the eaves and any dormer.
  2. We measure the eaves, the slopes and the stairs up to the loft, as everything has to get up there.
  3. We agree the cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and send a written quote, with the finish set out.
  4. Every part is built in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. We carry it up, fit it and check every door and drawer with you. Any hand painting is done in the loft.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

Arranging a design visit

To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Advice

Loft storage in Islington: what you get

A sloping ceiling leaves little room for a standard wardrobe. A wardrobe made for the slope follows its angle, with hanging where there is height and shelves or drawers lower down. It makes the most of the room’s height. We’ll plan it at the design visit in Islington. Most enquiries start with low eaves that nobody can use and boxes piled on loft boards; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A large share of the homes around Islington were built before 1919, and houses of that age are full of awkward spaces: the space under the stairs, the bay at the front, the alcoves, the hallway recesses and, where the loft has been converted, the eaves. Fitted storage is designed to make those spaces useful, made to follow walls that are seldom true.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

What affects the price in Islington

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Helping us understand the room

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To share them, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

How it’s made

Plinths and scribe strips

In a loft room, walls, slopes and floors are rarely straight. We use scribe strips and a plinth to take up the difference. That keeps the lines neat all round.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is smooth and even. It is done in our workshop before fitting. The colour is agreed with you.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

A standalone wardrobe can go with you when you move. Fitted storage stays put, and it makes far more of the loft. Which suits you depends on your plans. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It helps to talk about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Common questions about loft storage

Can you fit loft storage to the uneven walls of an older house in Islington?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Islington?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Can you make loft storage for a home in Islington?

Yes. We cover Islington, as part of our work across all London boroughs. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

How is loft storage priced?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. It depends on how much storage you want, the shape of the room and the finish. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

Storage in Islington homes: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 49% of the housing in the streets around Islington, with about 16% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Islington, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so the rest of London is inside it. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Islington is covered by it. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.

For an older house near St Mary's Church, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using. For a flat near Essex Road station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If your children go to Islington Proprietary School or a school nearby, eaves cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Islington is within the London Borough of Islington, about 1 mile north of Highbury. Homes in Islington are part of the area we cover for loft storage, as part of our work in every London borough. We cover places right across the rest of London.

Every home in N1, N7, NW1 and EC1V is within our area for loft storage. Our area takes in homes on streets such as Gibson Square, Old Royal Free Square and Cloudesley Square, for loft storage and any of our other fitted furniture. The B515 and A5203 run close to Islington; on busy main roads, unloading eaves cupboards takes a little planning. Neighbouring places we cover for loft storage include Pentonville (1 mile south), Angel (1 mile south), Barnsbury (1 mile north-west), Clerkenwell (1 mile south) and Lower Holloway (1 mile north-west).

Flats, conversions and lettings

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it at the design visit.
