Window seats designed for your room
Window seats for homes in Malden Rushett
We make each window seat in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the seat its strength, as it’s strong and holds screws firmly, and MDF gives the fronts and panels a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s brought to your home in Malden Rushett and fitted. People typically come to us about an empty bay that doesn’t get used and wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Around Malden Rushett, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the hall is often wide enough for coat and shoe storage. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Window seats are measured and made for the house you have.
Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

When you need someone else
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:
- Electrical work around the seat
- Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
- Making the seat cushion, which is not our work
Not sure whether your space suits window seats? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Common questions about window seats
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Malden Rushett?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.
Is Malden Rushett in the area you cover for window seats?
Yes. We cover all of Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London, and Malden Rushett is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We’ll design around them.
What does a bespoke window seat cost?
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The shape of the window, the mix of drawers and lids, and any grille all play a part. We set it all out in a written quote.
What happens at the design visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.
Window seats for homes in Malden Rushett
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Malden Rushett were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 45%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 23%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how window seats are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Malden Rushett, Historic England’s list includes Rushett Farmhouse (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Kingston upon Thames sets its own rules. If your road in Malden Rushett falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.
For families living near Chessington Community College, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. For a flat near Chessington South station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. Close to Claygate Common? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place.

How it is made
Lift-up lids
A lid can run the full width of the seat or be split into sections. Smaller lids are easier to open. We’ll discuss the options at the measuring visit.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. The seat and its frame are made from it, as they carry weight daily. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.
Looking after your furniture
None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:
- Tell us about parking during the design visit
- Make room so the whole bay can be measured
- Note whether your window has working shutters
- Decide whether you’d like a lid, drawers or both
We can give you the seat measurements for a cushion maker. Let the paint cure before the cushion goes on, to protect both the fabric and the finish.
Check now and then that hinges and handles are tight. A loose screw is easy to tighten before it works loose. If a lid or drawer starts to catch, tell us about the room on our contact form and describe what’s happening.
What happens on fitting day
Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.
- First you tell us about the bay or window where you’d like a seat.
- We come to measure and plan the seat, the storage and any radiator grille with you. We also talk about lift-up lids or drawers.
- We send a quote in writing setting out the design, materials and finish.
- The seat is made at our workshop and painted to your chosen colour.
- The seat is fitted in your home and checked so the lids and drawers run well.
How to prepare
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
Starting with a design visit
To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and a quote in writing follows.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Bespoke seats are scribed to the walls and set level, so there are no gaps at the sides or the base. A bench simply sits in front of the window. In an older room, the difference shows. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.
How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
