Window seats for homes in Hampton Wick

The storage under a window seat is often as useful as the seat itself. A lift-up lid opens the whole space beneath the seat, while drawers mean you don’t have to move a cushion to reach things. At the design visit in Hampton Wick, we will help you choose. We make window seats from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window and looking for a reading spot by the window.

Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, so the tricky spaces vary too: a bay, the space under the stairs, a hallway recess or the eaves of a converted loft. The furniture is made for the space as it is. Any meters, fuse boards or boilers stay accessible.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

What prompts window seats in Hampton Wick

For a child’s room, a seat under the window adds storage and a cosy spot. Drawers make it easy for children to reach their things. It also keeps the floor clear.

Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:

  • A bay window that is hard to furnish
  • A radiator under the window getting in the way
  • Looking for a reading spot by the window
  • Off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window

Hampton Court Palace, about 1.4 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Have they thought about parking near you?

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Seats take weight every day, so they need to be strong. Birch plywood suits them, as it is strong and holds screws firmly. It suits the drawers below too.

Spray-painted finish

Spraying gives a smooth, even surface. It’s done in our workshop before fitting. You choose the colour.

What affects the price in Hampton Wick

There’s no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Before the design visit

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, use our contact form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

What happens on fitting day

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the window. Say how you’d like to use it, if you know.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about how you’ll use the seat.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed. Read it through and ask if anything is unclear.
  4. Your window seat is made at our workshop, shaped to the window.
  5. The seat is fitted and set level, ready for a cushion, with the lids or drawers checked with you.

How to prepare

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Getting a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Fitted storage in Hampton Wick

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Hampton Wick were built before 1919 (about 37%) and since 2000 (about 26%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The Hampton Wick Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Hampton Wick. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Kingston upon Thames are set locally. If your street in Hampton Wick is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. We ask about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Near listed buildings like Church of All Saints, under half a mile south-east of the centre of Hampton Wick, older homes may keep original joinery that window seats can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Close to Canbury Gardens? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place.

Questions from Hampton Wick

Is parking a problem for fitting in Hampton Wick?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

My home in Hampton Wick is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.

What does a bespoke window seat cost?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. It depends on the size and shape of the window, the storage you want and the finish. To get a quote, drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Will a window seat work below a sash window?

Yes. Seats suit sash windows in many older homes. We measure the cill, the window and any shutters, so the seat sits neatly and the window still works. We do not repair sashes or cills.

How long does it take to fit a window seat?

The time the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Every part is built in our workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf benches aren’t designed to sit over a radiator. Placed in front of a radiator, they block the warmth. A bespoke seat has a grille or open front designed in, so the heat can reach the room. Recesses, sloping ceilings and tricky corners are where ready-made furniture struggles most, and most homes have at least one. Built-in pieces are made to fit them.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
