Window seats in Kingston upon Thames

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make window seats for homes in Kingston upon Thames, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Toys spread across a bedroom floor
  • Unused space below a sash window
  • A radiator under the window getting in the way

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting gives a slightly softer look than spraying. It can be applied on site, in a colour agreed with you. It can be matched to the window woodwork.

Lift-up lids

A lid that lifts is the simplest form of window seat storage. You will need to move any cushion to open it, so it suits things you reach for now and then.

How we make window seats for Kingston upon Thames

A window seat can be part of a larger piece of furniture. Shelving on each side, with the seat in the middle, makes a natural reading spot. The seat and the units around it are designed as one, so the lines and the finish match. We can talk through the options when we visit in Kingston upon Thames. Typical reasons to get in touch are wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room and a nursery or bedroom short of storage; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Where housing is mixed, as in much of London, no two homes have quite the same walls and floors. Window seats are scribed and levelled on site, so they look straight even where the room is not. The finish, spray-painted or hand-painted, is agreed with you.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Is bespoke worth it?

Ready-made seats rarely allow for a radiator. Placed in front of a radiator, they block the warmth. We design a grille into the seat so the radiator keeps working. Standalone furniture leaves gaps behind and above it that gather dust, and fitted furniture closes them, which makes cleaning simpler.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

The problems window seats solve

A quiet place to read is a common wish. A window seat, perhaps with shelves either side, does exactly that. It quickly becomes a favourite place to sit.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A radiator that makes the space hard to use
  • Nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books
  • A period room that needs furniture to suit it
  • A ready-made bench that does not fit the bay

Close to Canbury Gardens? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job

Fitted storage in Kingston upon Thames

In the area around Kingston upon Thames, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 36%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 21%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for window seats, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List has 59 entries within half a mile of the centre of Kingston upon Thames. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so the rest of London has its own. If your road in Kingston upon Thames falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Tell us what the parking is like at the measuring visit.

For families living near St Luke's CofE Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Luke, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear.

Questions from Kingston upon Thames

I live near Kingston station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover the whole of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room.

Can you make window seats for a home in Kingston upon Thames?

Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.

What happens when you come to measure?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

What happens on fitting day

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. We plan the details of the day at the design visit. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the window.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the window, the radiator and what you need. Shutters and cills are noted too.
  3. A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed. Read it through and ask if anything is unclear.
  4. We make the seat, the lids or drawers and any grille in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use, with the lids or drawers checked with you.

Before fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Ask for a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

What we don’t do

Not everything around window seats is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Making the seat cushion, which is not our work
  • Any wiring, which needs an electrician
  • Repairs to sash windows, cills or shutters

Not sure whether your space suits window seats? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll tell you. How it works.
